High pings & latency
Hi guys,
Not sure if it's isolated to late evenings but it's certainly worse after about 10.00pm through to about 8.00am but the latency on the O2 network is terrible. Average pings to google.com or bbc.co.uk are often over 1500 (!). I have a squeezebox system and often stream music to it but lately between these times I may as well forget it. Generally pings for the two services are down in the 30ms range. Starting to get a bit hacked off with it. Don't suppose anyone can recommend a decent business package provider can they?

Re: High pings & latency
IDnet and Zen are meant to be very good.
I would have gone with IDnet myself but the wife lost her job in November and so I had to go to BT as that was the cheaper option. Although BT itself has been very good and I have had no problems since moving over, ping 12ms to BBC at the moment and as I don't p2p no sign of overzealous traffic shaping. |

Re: High pings & latency
My pings don't go above 35ms to BBC.co.uk at any time of day (generally 20ms) so it could be a local to you exchange issue or maybe a routing server/congestion issue.
I've have had a couple of occasions where it's all gone slow in the past. The solution there was to force a change of IP to a different range and all was good. Before moving ISP it may be worth trying this (or does the business package give you a fixed IP?). Raise it as a complaint to O2 and get their network management guys too look into it and see if it can be resolved. Last edited by Saturday; 16-01-11 at 12:01 PM.. |

Re: High pings & latency
There is also a thread over at Thinkbroadband about this and people aren't very happy as it seems to be a fairly regular occurence.

Re: High pings & latency
Sorry for the late reply chaps.
Saturday - fixed IP unfortunately (first time I've said that). Tried a different router and into the test socket to rule out any internal wiring changes but it really is mostly between the times I've said. Not sure what is happening with O2 lately but they seem to be on a steady decline over the last 6 months or so. ![]() Sorry to hear about the wife Adrian ![]()

Re: High pings & latency
Sorry just saw your comment on raising it with support, Saturday - don't know why I didn't read that bit properly earlier (!).
I'll log it with them tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a local problem. So frustrating that Virgin have fibre running at the end of our street but not onto it, because the estate is too new. ![]()
