optimise (console) gaming,any tips.

ive been playing on the ps3 since i was connected last week and im more than happy with o2,going to try the 360 this week.i play BFBC pretty much all the time.
im always looking for ways to get the best out of my connection and equipment so i was wondering if anyone had any tips....ie,settings,best router...etc.
im asking cos i was thinking about getting a netgear router but im not sure if it will make any difference?i was also thinking about fastpath and trying to find out what difference it would make?
id just like to know what others do and their thoughts.
like i say,im happy and im not going to start messing with my connection but theres always those little tweaks that can make things that bit better.
1,ive set open dns on the ps3 and browsing is much faster.thats about the only thing ive changed so im thinking there must be more....?

Re: optimise (console) gaming,any tips.

I don't game an awful lot on the consoles but I've had problems.

With the O2 business router and the XBox360, I usually get strict NAT although I can generally still join games without too much trouble.

On the sons PS3, I can't connect to games full stop - I've given up trying to be honest as he's not into online play so much yet.

One of my friends binned his O2 home router for a sky one off of eBay and we flashed it with non-Sky firmware and both his XBox and PS3 just work.

Personally I don't want to lose the O2 router because although I get the odd overheating issue (touch wood - not for a wee while) I like some of the advanced features that I use with my business.

Hey ho - life's full of compromises ain't it?

All I can say is that if you do a lot of gaming then the O2 router probably isn't the best choice.

Peace.

Re: optimise (console) gaming,any tips.

I had to go with a sky dg834gt to get my xbox online again, the problems only appeared recently and port forwarding on the thompson stopped working after o2 started upgrading the overall system, could be a coincidence or maybe they made a mistake somewhere? but since i changed router problem solved.

link for portforwarding o2 thompson router

Re: optimise (console) gaming,any tips.

ive only been on o2 a week so its early days but ive been able to just plug my consoles in and everythings been fine,no problems
compared to virgin and sky,o2 is streets ahead.support is excellent.on sky i had to make a day of it to talk to someone...lol
i might get a netgear router just to see,the more i learn the better.

Re: optimise (console) gaming,any tips.

If you're a "heavy gamer" the last thing you want to do is lower your noise margin. With a margin of only 1.5db, although your sync will be higher, your throughput will be lower - and more importantly, your gaming will be more "laggy".

Please believe me - 99% of people would have a better connection if they just left the router to sync as it sees best, at the defaults.

Believe me - not only does Saturday know what he's talking about, in my own experiences although the modem provided by O2 on their business package is clearly not designed for gaming, on those games where I can connect/have managed to set up rules, I generally get a low-lag connection and on those times when I haven't it's tended to be the server that I connected to.

And that's just letting the router do it's own 'thang'

As Saturday says, your best to leave snr as standard, also that only affects download speed, for gaming your upload is actually as important and u have no control over that...

to get a fairly accurate idea of your ping goto Start menu,,,Run,,, type cmd....type ping Google.

speed test servers are generally not that accurate..
