ps3 connection test.
i swapped my ps3 80gb for the new slim and the new FW gives you upload and DL speeds when you do a connection test.
if im using my DG834GT and do a test,i get 846 ul and 5.5 dl. if i use my o2 box and do a test i get the same DL speed but upload comes back as 200-450 ![]() i always have NAT type 2 and the speeds are only estimates but the difference is pretty big and i cant understand why???ive googled and searched all over but i cant find any answers as to why this would happen. anyone got any ideas or anyone with the same routers and ps3 want to give it a go and see what results you get!!! |

Re: ps3 connection test.
Just more evidence that the O2 shipped routers aren't geared towards gaming
![]() It would be an interesting test to connect just the ps3 to the router and disable the firewall. My own investigations into other games suggests that the O2 ones are either a bit more in-depth in their packet inspection and/or don't handle some of the different ways that programmers seem to keep coming up with 'optimising' their TCP/IP traffic. Case in point being the Killing Floor game by Tripwire that I've mentioned in another thread. Seems like O2 and BT Homehub (both OEM'd by Thomson I believe) routers can't handle the way data flows, causing all sorts of crashing and hanging...Tripwire's suggestion - pole the manufacturer to fix the routers to support their (TW's) non-standard protocols...<sigh> The problem is not just games either. When Microsoft released Exchange 2007, they used a whole new bunch of Extended SMTP Verbs (ESMTP Verbs) - think email server commands for want of a better description. Most firewalls in place at that time couldn't handle them and in a lot of cases treated them as malformed SMTP verbs and binned them. This, of course, was by design because to the firewall it looked liked someone was trying to gain entry by malicious means. But...MS put the onus onto the Firewall manufacturers to change their inspection mechanisms. What is odd though, is I'd expect to see the same % drop in performance in both directions! The packet needs to be examined in both directions...very very weird.

Re: ps3 connection test.
you lost me a bit there but i get the gist of it,im gonna go and put the thompson back on and disable the firewall.ill do a connection test and get back in a minute.
EDIT..turned the firewall off and did a connection test,UL still coming back as 245!if i do a speed test through the browser it gives 900+ UL. i already get NAT type 2 so i dont think opening ports will make a difference......or will it?? Last edited by andy66; 07-09-09 at 05:31 PM.. |

Re: ps3 connection test.
Honestly, I don't know - I gave up trying to get my son's PS3 to talk through the O2 router.
I've downloaded a Linux based firewall that I'm hoping to run as soon as I get the time. Which might be never. I just think the O2 routers suck for gaming and nothing I've seen here or on other forums has done anything yet to change my mind ![]()

Re: ps3 connection test.
Ever heard of please and thank you?
Change your router. The solution is clearly discussed.

Re: ps3 connection test.
I did get my o2 box working with my ps3 slim (250)
but it did take a good 20mins of port forwarding as for the nat type well its always 2 when wireless if i use ethernet it jumps to Nat type 1. |
