Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

Hello.

I have just moved over to O2 from Sky and happy with my physical sync speeds which are : 1,313 / 19,088

If I am hard wired into the router I get around 1099 / 16421 Kbps on a speedtest.. but when Wireless I only get 1053 / 8057 Kbps

Upload is not a problem but seems a shame to lose almost double my download on wireless.

When I was with Sky I was getting 11-12000kbps on wireless using there supplied Netgear.

Do you think it's the O2 router that is the issue here? I do have an old Netgear DG834GT I could use but not sure about playing with the line suring the first 10 days or so?

Any pointers would be appreciated..

Jason.

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

Thought it might be worth saying that I have changed to different channels, both on Sky and O2 is used WPA, and router is in the same room as me..

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

You've done the obvious which is to try different wireless channels.

I'm really surprised that you're seeing such a difference between the Sky router and the O2 one, and even more surprised that you're seeing this when the router is in the same room! Is there a possibility that something else has changed e.g. you're using a different PC/laptop with different TCP/IP settings or wireless adaptor - or there's a new source of wireless noise nearby?

Comparing wireless throughput between my old Sky DG834GT and the O2 wireless box, I could see very little difference - if anything the O2 box was better (marginally).

Yes, you could use your old Sky router (I do) but you might be better off waiting until the O2 line testing is finished. You could of course just fire up the Sky router and not connect it to the phone line and see what throughput it offers moving files, assuming you have more than one PC/laptop (hardwire one and wirelessly connect the other).

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

Thanks for the reply..

I was getting these speeds today as I was only activated late this morning... Sky was fine, I unplugged the Sky router, set up the o2 one and did some tests.. So laptop config has not changed at all.

I would not be using the old Sky router, I have a DG834GT which I have used in the past for other ISP's, can't test throughput as not other PC's here..

I have also noticed since moving to O2 Youtube is stopping and starting, not sure if this is related to my wireless speeds as I have not tested it hardwired yet..

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

Curiosity got the better of me.. I configured my Netgear DG834GT for O2 and connected, I synch about 1mb lower but my wireless speedtest is now the same as wired connection.. So the O2 box is slowing my wireless down.

I have re-connected my O2 box and will let the DLM thingy for now.

Oh - Sky used to use the DG834GT so I presumed it was an old Sky one you had.

Sounds like the O2 box isn't performing wirelessly for you. To be honest it's not a particularly good router (terrible GUI and prone to resetting) but I've not heard bad comments about its wireless capability compared to other routers.

Personally I'd switch to the Netgear once line testing is complete. It seems to be particularly well suited to the O2 network (Broadcom same as their DSLAMS apparently) and I'm very happy with mine. Standard firmware is fine (DMT tool works with it) or some people use DGteam firmware.

Interesting to see if the Youtube issue is wireless related. I suspect it is or some other issue but someone else on the forum recently reported Youtube problems. I can't see any talk of this on the other O2 related forums though.

Good for you

Again, strange as the DG834GT usually performs same or better (syncwise) than the O2 box - you'll find plenty of references elsewhere. Wait until the line testing (DLM) is finished before you decide which gives better performance. Chances are your noise margin/sync is bouncing around a bit at the moment.

Now you know that your O2 box isn't working well wirelessly, even more reason to drop it, providing it syncs as well.

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

Thanks again...

Even if the Netgear syncs lower, I am still gaining 6-7mb over the wireless.. I only use a laptop wireless so want to make the most of it..

I notice from your profile your using a DG834GT, I have 3 old Sky ones, they never collected them after they sent me 2 and one has no wireless... The one I am set up for O2 was my own purchased one I used with UK Online.. Which firmwaredo you use?

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

Standard Netgear V1.02.14 flashed onto an ex-Sky DG834GT (very easy to do). Curious to know why you bought one if you had three old Sky DG834GTs - or are they 934s?

Of the DGs, the DG834 is the weakest having a TI AR7 chipset which runs a 150mhz mips cpu. The DG834G has the same chipset. Both are inferior to the DG834GT which is Broadcom and runs at 200mhz with a risc based cpu. The DG934 (Sky v2) is also AR7 I believe.

The DG834GT is a pretty good router even if it is rather old now.

Re: Slow(er) Wireless Speeds..

I made an error sorry.. I was in the UK Online upto 24mb ADSL Initial trial, and they send me various routers to test, the netgear was one of them, they didn't want them back either.

In the end UK Online went for the Netgear, so used until I moved to Sky, purely as they were cheaper.

The Sky ones I think I will flash to Netgear firmware and gove to my relatives who just have USB modems still.. I have a DG934 too

My DG834GT hasn't been used for a a while, so downloaded the latest 1.02.19 Firmware from Netgear today.

Just to double check does the DLM take 10 or 15 days? And is it complete once I get an SMS from O2? I read so many forums with some conflicting information.
