O2 Broadband help This is a discussion on, 02 just almost halved my speed within the O2 Broadband help and support forum; I'm pretty confident that the "engineer" they send out will only do as you have quoted i.e. check the PC ...

I'm pretty confident that the "engineer" they send out will only do as you have quoted i.e. check the PC and replace router/filters if necessary - they won't touch the wiring.

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

Well the BT engineer just finished up his testing here. he left to repeat the same tests at the exchange. he is confident its either my router or 02's equiptment at the exchange. hopefully 02 will solve this soon.

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

Spoke with 02 again.
Even after i gave them the job number and they accessed the details of the visit. the agent has put me on another 24hour line check, the third in a row. he insist its not 02's fault. since the call my new profile is ADSL and not ADSL2+, this is beyond a joke now

new stats

Uptime: 0 days, 0:13:26

DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,107 / 8,133

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 17.0 / 30.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 11.0

A few months ago im sure this would have been handled better

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

Well its stayed connected for 18 hours now. I have used the landline several times without affecting my broadband. I have a feeling this is what 02 will keep my connection at.

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

Leave it a couple of days then give them a call and tell them you've changed your phone/improved your wiring and ask them to drop your profile back to the 6db default to see if the problem is fixed.

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

quick update

02 sent an openreach engineer today after 2 hours he admitted he had to leave as he only been paid for 2 hours work.
he perofmed several tests inside my home and at the exchnage. he swapped a twisted pair? however he is convinced a cable between the exchnage and the cabinet needs also swapped out.
he left very frustrated and joked he'll be back no doubt, oh well time to call 02 again...

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

another eningeer just left jesus christ. fault was not present during all his tests. called 02 asked for the 8mb cap to removed, rebooted and connected at 13.5mb. lost the connection as soon as i dialed out, another call to 02 and they capped me 6mb. wtf is going on. how can a line that works for 6 months perfectly no longer be able to acept the speed. need a day off from 02 call centres I think
rant over

EDIT ping now at 60-90 time to look for another provider

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

02 called me back at 8pm to query the visit it had yeserday. i explained im no longer able to recieve the speed i used to get without the problems on the landline. he moved me to the 6db profile and connected at 12mb without no problems. He retested at 3db and it disconnected whitin seconds. so im back now on a 6db profile. im loaning a netgear (flashed sky model) today and im going to see if that can keep the 3db profile.

good times

Who are you ranting at Seems to me O2 have worked hard (and spent hundreds of pounds) trying to sort things for you. Your line quality has changed - it happens. Nothing to do with O2. It's your wiring /equipment or the BT line.

The 6db profile has been set for a reason - it allows a good quality connection for most people. A 3db profile leaves a tiny margin and is only suitable for very high quality lines. If your connection couldn't hold a sync at 3db for more than a few seconds then even 6db might not be enough. Though the Netgear router is marginally better than the O2 Box (in my opinion), it can't work miracles.

Chances are, for the majority of people, even if a 3db profile will hold, the level of errors generated and needing correction will only allow the same level of throughput as a 6db profile - even though the sync is a meg or so higher. Is a few k increase on an already fast connection that important to you?

A 3db profile is not a good idea for the vast majority of connections and I suspect it's only a matter of time before O2 decides that they need to reduce the number of calls coming in to set non standard profiles and the subsequent customer dissatisfaction with their non standard connection
