02 just almost halved my speed

i joined 02 back in feb/march, initally connected at 11MB. I redid the wiring in the house and after a quick call to 02 the agent lower my SN to the 3dB profile. I resynced at 15mb and having had a single drop in almost 5 months ( few other issues such as youtube and maintance slow down on some weekends).

Last friday i recieved a telephone call and my broadband disconnected and recconected itself. this happend several times over the weekend. BT took me through varius tests,

Switching filters
removing the router and just connecting the phone and filter
etc

all test where clear. i mentioned my handset is old and when i moved around it does crackle, however with the router not wired to the filter it is clearer. BT insisted it was an issue with 02 at my exchange

Called 02 yesterday and was told it would be passed to another department. iI didnt recieve any of the multiple calls back promised.

This afternoon an 02 agent called to tell me "you line is quite a mess, some one had set a 3dB profile your line cant handle it, i have fixed it all now. you line will no longer disconect when you use the telephone". i tried several times to explain it had been set for months now to no avail

I was shocked when logged into the router to see im now at 8mb and on 12dB profile.

another call to 02 , new agent stated DLM is running again however he expects 9MB to be my max. i asked to try a 6db profile but he refused

since that call im now and 15dB profile

what could have caused this random problem?

Impossible to say without more info.

I'd recommend letting DLM complete and then when finished running some tests to see whether the problem is related to your home wiring/phone or your BT line/O2 exchange equipment. Depending on the result, this may give you some options.

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

thnx for the advice, is there any software i can use to monitor the line or alteast when i discconect,

im now at a SN of 12.0 / 12.5 and it just dissconected again when i used my landline, i dont think it has anything to do with my sn profile but time will tell

EDIT this looks my new speed

7 more hours to go

im also picking up a new telepone up today see if that helps

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

Sounds like an equipment fault - either your phone or at the exchange. Although a low noise margin profile won't help, like you, I doubt that it's the root cause.

Unless something has just changed, O2 doesn't do DLM like Sky or other ISP's. It is just a temporary and short lived line test checking for errors/disconnections and adjusting the noise margin profile accordingly. Again, to the best of my knowledge, O2 adjust the noise margin in 3db increments. Had they increased your profile by 3db I'd have expected a bigger change than 1meg in your sync.

There are so many possible reasons for why your speed has dropped 1meg. Rebooting the router at a high noise time of day is the most obvious or maybe some change to your wiring or BT line.

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

02 cant find the root of the casue either, the best they can currently offer is 9mb and can not fix the discconecting no matter what \sn profile.

I just spoke with Bt after changing the telephone and the noise is worse, openreach enigineer is booked for tommorow

£150 call out and £99 per hour if its due to my rewiring, I hope its not lol

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

couldn't you have moved to the top Pro package and got the engineer out on that?

Re: 02 just almost halved my speed

from the O2 Pro package details O2 Home Broadband - Prioritised Customer Service

Your home or office needs a reliable internet connection and if anything goes wrong, you need it fixed quickly.

That's why our Pro package includes a 24/7 UK based dedicated customer service number that you can call anytime, and get straight through to an expert who can help.

And on those rare occasions we can't get you going again over the phone, with our inclusive Dedicated Customer Service we will send an engineer to your site the next day* at a time that suits to help get you back online. Our engineers will check your PC set-up and broadband equipment and will replace any faulty O2 Home Broadband equipment that day.

* Call 0800 380 0202 free from UK landlines
* Call 800 380 0202 free from O2 Mobiles in the UK
* Complete the email us form

*For problems not resolved over the phone (but raised before 4pm), O2 can arrange for an engineer to visit your premises the next business day (Monday -Friday, 8am-8pm) before 8pm.

As if I have any line problems then it may be worth my while upgrading to Pro and getting o2 to sort them out.
