Moving Home

Hey people

Basically im moving home next week

Im currently on a shocking long line of 5km and getting around 2.5Mb

I will be roughly 1.2Km max from the exchange at my new home so how fast should i roughly expect to achieve

The wiring is perfect as the line is brand new at the new home

So yes basically what speed will i get

Also how do i go around moving my broadband account over?

Thanks
Sam

Re: Moving Home

If your line length is 1.2km then this would equate to an attenuation of ~17db, which in turn will comfortably support a downstream sync of ~20meg.

All that presupposes that your line really is that short (as opposed to that being the straight line distance) and that your line/wiring is noise free (often not the case with new builds).

All ISPs should have a moving house process - call them.

Re: Moving Home

Thanks Saturday

Yes the house is only 13 years old

But the line was installed 3/7/09 by a openreach guy..

So yeah just spoke to o2 and im gonna have to wait until my landline has been transferred which is a pain then my broadband can be changed

so looks like im gonna be using my phone as a dial up modem for a few weeks...no fun

Re: Moving Home

dont get too excited, below is an image a BT engineer actually help me make while he was here. it shows my house in blue and the nearest exchange in red, however im acutally connected to the exchange further away and the cable is not exactly striaght.... i would have also been receiving the 20mb like my one of my neightbours if i was connected to the closest. apparently the exchange was overloaded and the last 4 people in my street (these are also new builds) had to be connected elsewhere

EDIT as for the wiring, its common that the wiring is all done by builders and is often a messy job. but this is all just a case of wait and see, regardless to this speculations i be happy to bet you will get a better speed than your current

God yeah anything would be a improvement welcomed

Ive been suffering for years with a sham of a service o2 have been diamonds to me and have giving me atleast 2.6Mb...

But the new house im going too is on "portslade" exchange which i should imagine not to be too congested as it supplies about 800 homes rough estimate... not sure... and majority are virgin media as well! so that helps

I'd be happy with even 8Mb for god sake... I have heard of that story before retro gamer my old neighbour moved ages ago because of broadband speeds who got a house next to the exchange and then when he was connected he got much slower then expecting!

With that attenuation of 34db you will not get the full 20Mb.
