Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
Hi,
I've been with O2 Broadband for just over 2 months now. When I first started I had a stable connection always around 14meg. However after the learning period it went down to 8meg. This is what my router stats show currently: Uptime: 0 days, 0:02:48 DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,211 / 8,133 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.5 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 20.0 / 36.0 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 15.5 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 2,004 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0 My question is, with a SN Margin of 15.5 could I get a faster connection? I Connect directy into the brand new BT Socket fitted when I first got O2 broadband. We have another socket located upstairs in a bedroom but seeing as it isn't used I disconnected it completely. Unfortunately this had no effect on any of the readings. Thanks for any help! Tim |

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
It will be much better to call 02 and ask.
your general stats suggest you should be gettign more but your SN is set to one of the highest setting did you do work to to wiring after your speed dropped or before? It may be noise on the line thats caused this. do you hear crackling or noise when using the landline?

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
OK I'll give O2 a ring and ask them. There is no noise or crackling on the line at all when using the phone - it seems like a very clean signal.
I did work to the line after the speed dropped, but again this made no difference to any of the readings from the router. Cheers Tim |

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
Just gave O2 a ring and it turns out somebody pressed the wrong button and set it to 8 meg. Instantly went up to 12 meg while I was on the phone. Great stuff!

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
How low would my upstream SNR have to be to get to that 1.3Mb.
Upstream Stats: Upstream speed 1184 kbps Line Attenuation 18.5 db Noise Margin 9.0 db |

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
Well your upload is slower than mine but your noise margin is 2db higher. So theortically your upload could be 1.3meg. Perhaps O2 have lowered it due to errors on your line.

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
I'm with sky broadband at the moment, just wanted to know how high it would go with the SNR set to 7db and would they lower it to 6db if i asked.

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
I'm not too sure, perhaps somebody here will know it it will increase your speed at all. No harm in asking sky though!

Re: Could I get a higher Sync Speed?
Sky won't lower your noise margin to 6db. You could do it yourself though using custom firmware (if available for your router) or a tool such as DMT (if your router supports it).
However, lowering your noise margin won't necessarily increase your upstream sync. It is all down to how Sky have configured your profile (interleaving etc) as well as your individual line characteristics. I don't think anyone on Sky is getting the full (theoretical) 1.3meg available with ADSL2+. |
