Connecting to DHCP server,
Greetings folks,
I have noticed a few times in the mornings that the router will not connect, Line stats are fine and no errors how ever it just shows connecting to DHCP server, This seems to last until about 13.30 and then it connects again, I called o2 the other day and they asked if they could change the noise margins to 9db to make the line more stable, Got off the phone reset the router like they asked and no change still connecting to DHCP server, On checking the router they have now got the snr`s at 12db so i have lost close to 3Meg on sync speed, And there is no change in the status of the router some morning it just hangs on connecting to DHCP, Line stats : Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,131 / 19,311 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 17.5 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 13.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12.5 / 11.0 Any one got any information that mite help ? With a attenuation of 13.5 line should be ok with a snr of 7 to hold the full 20Meg, Ps : i would not mind about the snr`s or the loss in the sync speed how ever from this has been done i keep getting connection drop outs ingame or connection errors, Regards Steven

Re: Connecting to DHCP server,
When you say "it just shows connecting to DHCP server", where are you seeing this message?
DHCP is used to allocate local area network info (IP address etc) to the PC which is done by DHCP discovery. The PC sends out a message to the network and the router responds. Is this problem happening when you bring your PC out of hibernation/standby/sleep mode? If so then you'll need to make some changes to the power management of your PC network card/wireless card. If you reboot the PC does it get assigned an IP OK? Or maybe I've misunderstood and you're saying you're not getting allocated an IP address by O2 in which case your router will not be showing an internet connection? In either event, changing your noise margin will have no effect on the problem. |

Re: Connecting to DHCP server,
Afternoon Saturday,
I am getting this from the router its self, I have Dsl and Atm but no Ethernet, So when i login to the router page where it should show : Broadband Connection O2_ADSL: Disconnected O2_ADSL2plus: Connected I get : Broadband Connection O2_ADSL: Disconnected O2_ADSL2plus: Connecting to DSCP server, Now this has only happened a few times, O2 say that changing the snr will fix the issue but i did not fix it that day, Now the strange thing is that when it happens from what we can tell come 13:30 it will be ok ! ? Regards Steven

Re: Connecting to DHCP server,
Ah - in that case ignore my comments about power management, the problem lies between your router and its communication with O2's equipment.
I am really struggling to understand why O2 think that increasing your noise margin would get things working as they should, unless they are under the impression that your noise margin is falling to zero in the mornings so not allowing the router to connect at all? When this problem occurs is your noise margin very low? A very low noise margin in the morning but fine in the afternoon/evening is the very opposite of normal noise margin behaviour. If it is a noise margin issue which clears up by around 1:30 each day then I suspect that there is a local problem to your line caused by electrical equipment that only runs in the morning. This could be within or close to your home or even miles away next to your phone line. Unusual but it does happen. The key question is what is your router reporting as the noise margin when you're getting the DHCP error? If it is say 3db or above then noise margin is not the issue and it is most likely an O2 setup (DHCP server lease problem) fault - or possibly the router, though I think the router being at fault is unlikely. |

Re: Connecting to DHCP server,
Greetings Saturday,
I am also not sure, Any time this happens the snr`s seem fine, The lowest i have seen it has been 6.5db and this was when it was set to 7db, Thats a good point you made about some rein interference, I called them last night and asked it to be set to 9db for now and will see how it goes, As for the power manangement i have all ready took care of this the day i install the os as i have seen what i can do, Regards Steven
