Maybe a dumb question, but...

I have a grey Sky router sat around that I'm thinking of using to replace my O2 box (in a nutshell, my son wants to use the web for gaming, and as we all know the O2 box sucks for this).

I know the upgrade procedure to put generic firmware on it, but I was wondering if someone knew the equivalent Netgear model? It was one of the first grey boxes from Sky with the properly rebranded firmware, if that helps.

Ta muchly.

The Sky Netgear V2 has the model designation DG934GT. I don't believe it is a standard Netgear model and has only been manufactured for Sky.

Re: Maybe a dumb question, but...

Hmmm...thanks Saturday. Happen to know if there's a non-sky firmware that I can put on? Perhaps the DGTEAM (sp?) ?

Re: Maybe a dumb question, but...

You can trick it and load the Netgear DG834GT firmware on it so I'd have thought you could put the DGTeam firmware on it too - though don't know for sure.

Re: Maybe a dumb question, but...

Odd..I tried the 834GT over the weekend (thinking that's what it was) using the Sky firmware/Netgear firmware file swap trick and although it seemed to flash, when the router is powered off and back on it's back in recovery mode with the two led's flashing alternatively.

But...I've since read that perhaps I needed a DG834GT V3 firmware for it and I think I may have had a V1 firmware.

Unfortunately now I'm back in Belgium until the weekend so I cannot try it out for sure. lol

Re: Maybe a dumb question, but...

Might as well ask here, so i don't have to start a new thread.

Can i put different firmware on the Sagem F@ST 2504? It's a sky router, works very well, never loses connection.

You can put Sagem generic on:

Restoring the Sagem router after it's been flashed

Maybe its just me but i am happy enough with the o2 box,
I have the II box and from what i have seen so far i am happy,
I have a 3 story house and even on floor i get 3 out of 5 bars for the wireless,

As for gaming my system is a pain in that every time i connect a usb wireless adapter or my webcam the system crashes,
Now i have used other adapters and it works ok on windows xp but nothing above that,
So i have my pc connected by cable in to a hub and from the hub to my laptop and from it to the o2 box using wireless and i am still able to play ok on it,

As i said maybe its just me but i dont mind the o2 box,

Re: Maybe a dumb question, but...

I like it too, Steven, but as an example it causes problems with Killing Floor (the game)...not because, as it turns out, there is anything wrong with the router but because Tripwire (the authors) have written their netcode in such a way that it causes problems on some Thomson and BT HomeHub routers...and in a stunning show of arrogance they refuse to do anything except tell users to petition the router manufacturers to fix the problem.

I'll resist the temptation to rant about it, in the same way I resisted the temptation to send their software license back with a letter telling them where to stick it (but only 'cos my son likes said game) so I'm going to use the Netgear (or buy one if needs be) so he can play.

Not sure of any differences but mine is also the 'business' router that gets sent and it does have some nice features but in truth none that the the Netgear don't have that I'm using, so it shouldn't be a huge loss to me.

I do keep toying with the idea of opening the router up completely and putting in a Linux based firewall but it's a time thing more than anything else!
