What's the best router to use with 02 broadband to get max speeds???

hi

i am moving to 02 broadband from sky within the next 6 weeks and was curious as to whats the best router to use as i have lower speeds with sky's modem which i use at the moment then the speeds shown by a bt engineer that ran a test on my line yesterday...he was getting 1 meg more on my line with his modem.

Will i have the same problem with 02 equiptment i have heard on skyuser its best to match the chipset to your exchange or something can u recommend a router for DENTON BURN exchange or will the 02 be good enough.

Looking for max speeds.

thanks

Re: What's the best router to use with 02 broadband to get max speeds???

think what your getting mixed up with is this....

Sky handle the overheads in your connection hence when your internet connection is managed by O2 you will get the extra that your missing with Sky.

I get an extra 1.5 - 2mb since I have connected with O2

As to which modem to use Im currently using the supplied modem from O2 but as you maybe aware its easy to reimage your ex sky modem to use for O2, some users state its better for PS3 / Xbox use. I have a PS3 connected via ethernet and as yet have only noticed a vast improvement on the poor ping rate that sky provided.

Welocme aboard

Re: What's the best router to use with 02 broadband to get max speeds???

I am using my old Sky white V1 router (Netgear DG834GT) flashed with the DGTeam V1.02.16 Rev. 0848 firmware and have no complaints whatsoever. (The ex Sky white V1 routers (Netgear DG834GT) are available for about £10 via ebay if you haven't got one.)

The connection and download speeds that Sky said they couldn't provide and I couldn't have after DLM (even though I'd had a stable connection for nearly 2 years) mysteriously reappeared plus a bit extra on day one of my connection with O2.

I think that tells you all you need to know about the difference between Sky and O2!

Can you explain this alittle more about the overheads, does that mean that if I went to o2 broadband I would get an increase in speed like you did of 1.5 to 2Mb over what I have now. my current stats,

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12992 kbps 1142 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.5 db 18.5 db
Noise Margin 7.60 db 8.0 db

I wouldn't bother, it's nothing to do with overheads or whatever he's on about. The reason you get slightly better connect speed with O2 is that they set a lower target SNR than Sky.

Yes you will get a slight increase, as neil states there is a difference in the manner in which sky and O2 deal with SNR which is also classed as an overhead.

Overheads are an allowance given for interference on the customer line or at the exchange.

Re: What's the best router to use with 02 broadband to get max speeds???

With the stats I have posted higher up how much more speed do you think I could get out of the line, with sky I can get the speed to 14.5Mb it slows at night but that is not important, but even at that speed the SNR on the drowstream is still over 7db.

The big thing is the upstream, I know with an SNR of 6db i could get very close to that 1.3Mb, the way that sky works the broadband must slow the speed.
