Access Customers

Have your speeds dropped dramatically since O2 implemented the traffic shaping.

Mines now down to about 1/10th come 6pm, reminds of $ky (God No!)

Anyway O2 are saying it May not be down to their traffic shaping, just want to double check before a Mac request.

Many thanks

Re: Access Customers

O2 have been very specific in their Home Access product traffic management claims (doesn't apply to LLU):
  • We’ll only manage traffic when we’re busiest – from 8pm to 11pm or whenever our network’s congested
  • You can still use whatever programs you like, however peer to peer and newsgroup programs will run slower during traffic managed times
  • Streaming audio and video using sites like Spotify or BBC iPlayer will work normally and may even be faster
  • We won’t limit your actual connection speed – just peer to peer programs and newsgroups

Are you seeing a slow down for all traffic?

Re: Access Customers

Yeah absolutely, speeds drop from 2000kbs to 200ish, everything from downloading updates on iPhone/360/ps3 is shot, 11mb file takes 35-40 minutes.

Online gaming is a past life, as is any kind of streaming.

Sorry I only seem to post when I need a bitch.

Re: Access Customers

Well there are a number of possible reasons for this I can think of:
  • It's O2 traffic management (shouldn't be affecting all traffic)
  • An overloaded exchange (can't cope with peak demand - what happens to speed at weekends?)
  • Something on your system using bandwidth (Sky player/BBCi player are common culprits - though it shouldn't just be peak time)
  • Someone on your LAN using bandwidth (are there other users and is your network secure?)
  • The servers you're connecting to are overloaded (is it all game/streaming sites or just some?)
  • You're using wireless and there's interference at peak times (another nearby wireless router/ baby alarm/video sender etc)

The first two would be down to O2, the remainder down to you.

HTH

  • Something on your system using bandwidth (Sky player/BBCi player are common culprits - though it shouldn't just be peak time) Dont use em, dreaded Kontiki
  • Someone on your LAN using bandwidth (are there other users and is your network secure?) I'm a qualified IT Technician mate, its secure
  • The servers you're connecting to are overloaded (is it all game/streaming sites or just some?) Everything and anything, I only listed the consoles to show the variety in platforms tried, gaming, iphone, laptop, desktop
  • You're using wireless and there's interference at peak times (another nearby wireless router/ baby alarm/video sender etc)I use powerline ethernets, but i must admit i could check wifi interference, but thats only the laptop

The first two would be down to O2, the remainder down to you.

Just wanted to check if anyone else on access had any issues really

Re: Access Customers

Yes I'm having major issues at peak times now, my speed is about 1mb which is bearable but my ping is 600+ i cant play xbox live any more til after midnight.
During the day its fine. Have been onto the help department about it and they said they need to upgrade their servers as it cant handle everyone being online! Did say they are going to upgrade soon but not set a date.

Re: Access Customers

I could not get online at all last night.
All lights were green on my router.
Phoned O2, told me to use command prompt to ping google.
first one failed second one came back at 160ms then third failed and fourth came back at 171ms.
tried it again and they all failed, then again 1st and 4th failed.

Bloke on the phone couldn't understand it, but because was using my own router he couldn't help me figure the problem out.

I still haven't plugged in the wireless box II but problem is gone, so surely a problem their end and not mine?

Anyway if it happens again i now have my wireless box II on standby to swap over!

Anyone else had a problem like this last night or ever?

Re: Access Customers

Surely i'm not the only one suffering in the evenings.
have phoned them again and they said their is nothing they can do, and i will just have to bare it, until they kick the traffic management in, then they reckon my speed will improve. If it doesnt i think i might just have to take my custom elsewhere.

Re: Access Customers

i think everyone's suffering on 02's upside down traffic management on access iv gone from 6mbs to 0.3mb between 5.30pm and 2am crazy situation although my torrent speeds are now capped at 400kbs in the evenings which has come down from 770kbs max during the night newsgroups are down at 150kbs unencrypted but 400 kbs encrypted so there still running the traffic management
