Great stats poor speed..

Hi all,

I should qualify "poor" with half what I pay for as a new subscriber to O2 Premium 20 Meg

The BE Speed Test gives me 9000 kbps

The O2 broadband pages gives me a sync of 13 Meg

I am 650 metres from the exchange by Google maps (road not crow) (660 according to Sam)

I am wired to the router with brand new CAT6/Cat5e compatible STP patch, filter is plugged into master socket, extension unplugged.

I get 14ms pings to news.bbc.co.uk

These are my stats from the O2 Wireless Router taken this afternoon...

Uptime: 0 days, 0:55:01

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,347 / 12,248

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.5 / 19.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 6.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 11 / 1,422,259

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 11 / 6

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 190 / 3

I do appreciate I should be grateful for 12,000 kbps - but I was hoping for something nearer 18,000 kbps.

Also, despite great ping times, VoIP apps are laggy, and even the web decidedly lumpy occasionally.

Any thoughts much appreciated!!

Cheers,

Re: Great stats poor speed..

Your attenuation is great i.e. your line length is short. However, your sync speed is very low for your attenuation which means you have a lot of line noise.

Line noise can arise anywhere but is far more common from the home phone wiring than the BT line. Line noise in your home is your responsibility to fix. Start by checking all filters are in place, one for every telephony device inc Sky box if you have one and correctly fitted. Next up is phone extensions: plug in ones are terrible, hard wired better but can also be a problem, irrespective of whether your router is connected to the master. What results do you get connected to the test socket (assuming you have an NTE5 it's hidden inside the master)? If the same then it's probably line noise from your BT line. If it's better then you'd benefit from fitting a replacement filtered faceplate to the master.

A sync of 12,248kbps should give a throughput of ~9800kbps which isn't far off what you're getting. The shortfall between 12.2 and 9.8 is down to TCP/IP overheads - nothing you can do about that. Speedtesters are, by and large, rubbish by the way. If it says 9000kbps that can be +/- 1000kbps or more depending on the speedtester and the server load.

You say you're wired to the router, your post isn't entirely clear? If your connection gives poor VOIP and seems "lumpy" the first thought I'd have is that you're connecting wirelessly? Can you clarify?

Re: Great stats poor speed..

If you have a test socket, please post your stats from here.

Re: Great stats poor speed.. Wowzers!

Hey guys thanks for your responses.

Just to answer your first question, no I am wired to the router with brand new CAT6/Cat5e compatible STP patch cable, and I am getting 100 Mbps full duplex into my Gig nic so I should be able saturate any line easily!

However, I did what you both suggested and tried the test socket, Well well well... these are the new stats:

Uptime: 0 days, 0:12:34

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,334 / 20,033

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8.0 / 16.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 11 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 1 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 911

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 1

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 203 / 1

Along with the BE speed test of 15887.9 kbps, the new speed test stats attached!

I am really surprised, the SN Margin has hardly changed yet the attenuation has dropped by 2.5 dB.

Saturday - what's this filtered faceplate you mention? This sort of thing: Clarity - UK ADSL BT Linebox Adaptor Faceplate

Thanks for the suggestions,

Re: Great stats poor speed..

There you go

Yes, the clarity would be a good choice though some people feel the ADSLnation products are better. Little in it though I suspect. If you fit one you should get near identical performance to your test socket. When you order one make sure you get a disposable IDC tool (~£1) to properly make the connection for your extensions. Fitting a replacement faceplate is a breeze.

Your attenuation has dropped as you've bypassed some duff wiring by using the test socket. Your noise margin is the same because it's at the O2 default. Your router will always negotiate the best speed it can for the default noise margin. After negotiation the noise margin will then drift in response to changing line conditions.

Your speedtest is just about spot on for your sync (TCP/IP overheads are ~17-20%).

Now just need to address your VOIP/lumpy internet issue if that still exists once you've sorted your wiring out. Doubt that will be down to the O2 network but will be some other factor or factors.

Re: Great stats poor speed..

ADSLNation does sell the Pressac faceplate for quite a reasonable price - NTE-2005

I've tried this, which I currently have installed, and the more expensive XTE-2005 and could see no discernible difference between the two.
