Unsure if my connection is the best it can be

Hello

Im new to ADSL and when I first ordered broadband from o2, they predicted a speed of 16mb, after activation it turns out only 8mb is possible. I was wondering why this is? is there anything I can do to improve the speed? I have included my router stats below but they mean gibberish to me!

Uptime: 0 days, 0:14:16

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,239 / 8,378

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.5 / 41.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 5.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Re: Unsure if my connection is the best it can be

ADSL speed is limited by line length and line noise. Your line is fairly short as shown by your attenuation so the problem is line noise. Doubt 16meg will be possible though, maybe 11meg if you're lucky. O2 can only predict based on the info BT give them which in this case wasn't correct.

The good news is that line noise often arises in the home wiring and can be fixed. How is your router connected to the phone line - with an extension? Is everything else protected by its own filter?

Re: Unsure if my connection is the best it can be

I tried unplugging a extension lead thats connected into the filter (which is connected to the only socket in my little flat). and I tried swapping it with the other filter O2 provided, the speed remains the same.

It does not matter to much the ping is great on it, wonderful for games, and since most games are happy with 2-3mb as long as you have a good ping its not irritating me, in fact the only reason I brought it up was because o2 told me about it!

Have you looked on the back of the master socket faceplate to make sure no other wires are connected that you don't know of.
