Re: Router Stats?
Poor. You're getting about half the sync speed possible for your attenuation so you have a lot of line noise.
Rather than repeat the advice that's been posted many times on the forum, have a quick look through other posts to see what you can do to reduce line noise. Similarly, you'll find info on username/password issues in the tutorial section though there's a good pictorial description on O2's site here. Post back with any specific questions you have. |

thanks for the reply, i was away to the football yesterday and ended up a wee bit tipsy after it
![]() as i've said in another post, i'm going to fit a adsl nation faceplate and move my router to that socket and run network cables, as i'm sure i read that extension sockets can cause this |

Re: Router Stats?
That sounds a good plan but if you want to see what benefits this will deliver ahead of fitting the new faceplate, connect your router directly to the test socket inside your master socket using the supplied router cable and a filter. If the improvement is small (i.e. the problem is with your BT line) then you may feel it not worth the expense/trouble of buying and fitting a new faceplate.
However, more often than not, a filtered faceplate on the master and the router directly connected will improve most connections. Last edited by Saturday; 25-01-10 at 09:05 PM.. |

Re: Router Stats?
thanks again, just connected it up to the master socket
![]() looks to be about a 1.5meg increase update now with router back upstairs ![]() Last edited by bjproc; 26-01-10 at 04:17 AM.. |

Re: Router Stats?
A spedtest result can only give you an indication I'm afraid. Because a speedtest result can be dependent on many factors and especially with a speedtest as unreliable as speedtest.net, you must look at your router sync as shown in your router stats to see what the affect actually is.
If when you check the router sync you find you're only getting a small increase then that's disappointing as you have a shortfall of ~5meg on your line's potential. A small change would show that the main problem probably lies with your BT line - and a new faceplate won't improve your BT line. Still, any improvement is better than none. Re: Router Stats?
thanks again,
this is from my netgear router ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 7117 kbps 1200 kbps Line Attenuation 38.5 db 21.1 db Noise Margin 9.8 db 6.3 db i think i'll still put on the face plate, as i bought one a few years ago, all i need is a 10m network cable for my HTPC, which is only a few pounds and an couple of hours work, as the router is working off of an extension off of an extension ![]() |

Re: Router Stats?
Looks like you're getting about an extra meg but interestingly your noise margin is much higher than from your other socket. Normally you'd expect the router to resync at O2's default noise margin whereas yours is 9.8db which is ~3.5db higher than default. The only explanation I can offer is that your connection is capped (never, ever seen that with O2), there's an issue with the Netgear router or your line was noisy at the time the router resynced (most likely). Try rebooting the router and see if it will sync at around 6/6.5db dowmstream. If it does then you should see another meg or so improvement in your sync.
Yes, it's well worth fitting the faceplate anyway but it does rather look like you have a BT line issue as well as some home wiring problems. |

Re: Router Stats?
Yes, the noise margin is where it should be now.
You'll probably find that if the router is left connected the noise margin will drop now as and when the background noise level increases. A db or two change is normal through the day - more than that is another indication of line problems. |
