Question Packet Loss?

i've tried the sister site of speedtest, pingtest and my packet loss has failed?

on the learn more button, it says this

Quote:
Much as it sounds, if you have anything less than complete success in transmitting and receiving "packets" of data then you are experiencing this problem with your Internet connection. It can mean much slower download and upload speeds, poor quality VoIP audio, pauses with streaming media and what seems like time warping in games -- your connection may even come to a total standstill! Packet loss is a metric where anything greater than 0% should cause concern.

so what does this mean?

some sites have taken a wee/fair bit longer to load, could this be the problem?

Re: Packet Loss?

In a previous post (which you've not responded to) I pointed out that your connection was poor - probably line noise. I suspect that may be the cause of the packet loss you are seeing and in turn, that is probably why your connection seems slow.

EDIT: scrub that. I've just noticed that in the graphic you posted it says "unable to test packet loss" even though the ping test was OK. Looking at their learn more button I see you quoted "what is packet loss" but didn't quote (or see?) what was written above this:
Why was I unable to run the packet loss test?

The packet loss test requires that a Java Runtime Environment be installed on your computer. Also your firewall must allow the test to communicate to the Pingtest.net servers (specifically outbound port 5060 for both TCP and UDP though that is being changed to 8080 before the end of the beta - some servers have been changed already). If our test is unable to communicate with Java or the packets are getting blocked by a firewall then the packet loss test will be skipped.
The comments about your line noise problem stand though.

Re: Packet Loss?

It's nothing to do with what socket you're connected to. As I said before, it's either a problem with the test itself or your PC/router configuration (if Java is OK then it's probably a firewall issue).

I've just run the test myself and got the same result and frankly can't be bothered to find out why - the test is worthless in any event. If you want to test ping and packet loss please use the utility provided by Microsoft which will give a meaningful result. If you're not sure how do the following:
  • Open a DOS box (command prompt)
  • Type ping bbc.co.uk
  • Press return
