Balancing Upstream and Downstream connection rates

I have just moved over from Sky to O2. My downstream attenuation is 58-59 on gdmt and about 61 on adsl2+.

When I first started with Sky I had a downstream connection speed of about 2900 - 3000 kbps and upstream of 384. Then Sky applied DLM and my downstream fell to 2720 kbps and my upstream rose to about 600 kbps.

After changing to O2 I am on adsl2+ with a downstream 2676 kbps and an upstream still around 600 kbps. The noise margin is MUCH more stable on O2 at 6.5 downstream.

I do not believe that I will get better speeds than this. However, what I would like to do is rebalance the downstream/upstream mix so that I sacrifice some upstream speed to get the downstream back to around 3000 kkps. Is this possible and, if so, how would I go about it?

Thanks,

Felix

Re: Balancing Upstream and Downstream connection rates

Nothing you can do but O2 might be prepared to experiment for you. It's not an exact science so the results won't be predictable but you may see a small increase in your downstream if the upstream is capped.

The thing is, your router and the exchange equipment will be utilising the available bandwidth as efficiently as possible and they've settled on 2676/600. Freeing up some lower frequencies used by the upstream may not make them available to the downstream. It will be down to the noise profile on your line.

Still, no harm in trying. Give O2 a call and ask if you can be put through to 2nd level support. If you get through then ask them to try capping your upstream to see if it makes a worthwhile difference to your downstream.
