High SNR, low speeds

We used to get around 1.5-2mb sync speed, until a couple of months ago when it fell to the current levels. At that time, our SNR also rose to it's current level. I'm not sure what's happened, but it's starting to get really annoying.

I know the attenuation is poor, but experience has shown me that the line is capable of much higher speeds.

Also, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I've noticed that when it first syncs, the SNR is low, around 6dB, but then after a couple of seconds it shoots up to 19dB, where it stays.
Edit: Just noticed, when the SNR suddenly increases after connecting, this figure also suddenly increases from 0: HEC Errors (Up/Down): 274,459 / 0

Any ideas?

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 906 / 710
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 33.0 / 57.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 19.0

Re: High SNR, low speeds

Sounds like a line fault to me.

First off have you got another router cable you could try? Could be faulty. Similarly, does jiggling the router cable make the noise margin shift? If so then it's the connector.

If that all checks out OK then you'll have to try the rest of your wiring. What is your router plugged into? Have you a test socket?

There is a small chance that the problem is actually the router but best to start with the wiring which is more likely.

Re: High SNR, low speeds

I managed to find another router cable, so I tried that, and jiggled it around a bit but this had no effect.

We have one of the old single piece master sockets, and so have no test socket, but I have tried plugging the router into that, with little effect.

I may be able to find our old router lying around somewhere, in which case I'll try that, but I have a feeling I tried it a while ago with no result.
