Are they packet shaping?

Apologies if this is discussed elsewhere - I don't visit this forum often enough.

I got awful download speeds last night (9pm and 11pm) when downloading media from Usenet. Usually, such downloads hit my peak of around 11Mbps, but last night it was 4-6Mbps. I just now (4pm) did a speed test and it seems fine. Unfortunately I didn't run one last night. I don't often run big downloads from Usenet, so I doubt that I have triggered any unfair use alarms.

Does anyone know if O2 Premium is being filtered by O2 to restrict Usenet downloads?

Re: Are they packet shaping?

I'm sure that O2 must do traffic management (which may include packet shaping) - that would be good practice to keep everything running well on the network.

What wouldn't be good practice would be for it to be at all significant or very noticeable to the end user. At peak times you might expect a small degradation but nothing like what you report. Slow/overloaded servers that you were downloading from sounds much more likely to me. In my experience downloading from a decent Usenet service will invariably max out my O2 LLU connection.

That's what it used to do for me. Hopefully, this was a one-off. As I said, I don't use it very often.

Yes, sure hope so. Let us know if it happens again.

Re: Are they packet shaping?

Good news. Downloaded from NewsDemon again last night (23:50) and it peaked at 13.6Mbps according to my meter. All back to normal. Phew.
