Exclamation O2 Router Sync Problem

Hello, I've got an o2 wireless II box I've got a problem with the box, I can't really explain it properly but its my sync speed wont stay up with wireless on.

I don't know what the problem is, I've got an old sky router the white one but because of the different Chipset it only syncs at 7-8mb and drops connection every 20mins..

I do get a 85% throughtput so if it says 10.9mb sync when speedtesting/downloading it works out to 9.35ish on the o2 box.

I was wondering what router can i purchase that will give me a higher sync speed with wireless on since i have like 8-9 wireless products at home but i tend to only have 3 connected via wireless at a time OR if i can fix this router?

I haven't contacted o2 again, I did once contact them but they didn't know whats going on and said try turning it on and off they was no help so didn't ring them again.

Well the stats below if it helps almost a 1.5mb difference

Re: O2 Router Sync Problem

Oh and i've tried plugging in to test socket behind the master socket or w/e its called..

I've removed the bell ring wire before with it on i was getting even lower speeds but when i was with sky broadband i gettiing 15mb sync :s

My house is only 3years old it was a new built and o2 said i'll only be able to get 7mb but with the first wireless III box they sent me i was getting close to 16mb down and 1.7 up, I dont know why things have gone down so much just with a router/package switch, I asked to be put on 3db profile aswell to help speed things up but they're still slow, I don't have any drop outs on wireless ii box but the nets slow.

I assume my routers faulty but o2 are having none of it even tho when i was on pro package i was getting more.

Re: O2 Router Sync Problem

OK - several things going on here:
  1. Your attenuation at 37db could never support 15meg. Therefore if that's what you were getting before then either your line has deteriorated markedly or your line has been swapped for a longer one. If your line was in such bad condition that the attenuation rose significantly then you'd see a lot of connection problems so the latter seems more likely.
  2. Lots of people use their old Sky router successfully so I can't understand why it would sync so much lower than the O2 router. The opposite is usually the case.
  3. Moving to a 3db profile is rarely successful unless you have a very short/clean line. Yours isn't short.
  4. Your differing syncs with wireless on and wireless off certainly point to a router fault, possibly the power supply.

My advice would be to move back to a 6db profile and persevere with O2 for a router replacement (or buy one). Then I'd try to get to the bottom of why I once got 15meg but now only 10meg, though frankly, if your line has been changed then there's little you can do unless you know a friendly BT engineer.

EDIT: Thinking a bit more about your wireless problem, my guess is that with wireless on there's noise generated for some reason. With your 3db profile that means the router reboots or becomes unstable so resyncs at a lower speed to get back to 3db. Try the following: turn wireless on, leave for a few minutes then reboot. Check your sync speed and then turn wireless off, then check your sync speed again. What I'd expect is that the sync stays the same but the noise margin jumps higher. If that's what happens then you definitely have a faulty router.

Re: O2 Router Sync Problem

I've been on the 3db thing for almost a year and no problems the lines just messed up when i swapped from pro package down to premium and swapped routers from Wireless III to Wireless II i think he box is faulty as it gets really warm.

Oh and for no reason the router rebooted in morning to a much lower sync and went off adsl2+.. I know the routers at fault here since its overheating (i think)..

I was going to purchase a netgear dgn2000 would that be good with o2 or would it keep having drop outs like the old sky one? ( the sky one has a incompatable chipset i heard)

Re: O2 Router Sync Problem

The old Sky router is reported to have a MORE compatible chipset to O2's exchange equipment. Whether that's true or not I can't say but it almost certainly isn't less compatible.

Your router rebooted to a lower sync and off ADSL2+ because the noise margin dropped too low.

Re: O2 Router Sync Problem

Not that sky old router it doesn't its got a different chipset not the broadcom .. with it i sync much lower speed and it always drops out after ever 20mins of net use.

ermm which router is best to get Netgear dgn2000 or dg834n?
im going to use wireless alot if it works and doesnt cause router to overheat/crash all the time?

Which one is better from them, I would like a wireless box iii since it gave me no probs but o2 won't give it say i gota pay for it or move to pro package

Re: O2 Router Sync Problem

You said "I've got an old sky router the white one". That is a Netgear DG834GT and I can assure you it has a Broadcom chipset.

I can't advise you on which router out of the DGN2000 or DG834n would be better as I have no experience of either. With any reputable, properly functioning router, using wireless should neither cause overheating/crashes or lower sync.
