lost 1mb off my d/l

a few weeks ago started to get drops in connection and a bad telephone line, this lasted for a weekend then seemed to sort its self out.

I normally connect at 6.5 - 7mb D/L the best I can get is 5 - 5.5 mb atm

I assume work is going on at my exchange, I have tried the master socket and its the same stats as below. My telephone line is now fine.

Any ideas?

Re: lost 1mb off my d/l

Well with an attenuation of 49db you'd only expect a downstream sync of a shade over 6meg so you're not too far off that. Getting 6.5 - 7meg before shows your line was very "clean". The shortfall you're now getting is going to be down to line noise I'm afraid.

Re: lost 1mb off my d/l

Hi stu_uk,

I'm glad that your dropping connection seems to have sorted itself out

About your speeds, I see that you've tried the router in your master socket. Have you tired connecting the router to the test socket?

If your master socket looks like it's split in half, there will be a test socket behind the master socket. Gently remove the face plate and try your router in there.

If you get higher sync speeds, there may be an issue with some sort of internal wiring issue.

Let us know how you get on

Paul

Re: lost 1mb off my d/l

ty for the replies guys

Yes Paul Im anal tbh I checked all my sockets to make sure Id not got the bell wire connected, I then reconnected each wire to ensure no crap connections due to oxidation and there is a very minimal drop in stats from the extension socket as aposed to the test socket.

I can only assume that its either a issue on the line somewhere as its a v long run or some nice person has changed something at the exchange.

I have a long history of crackly lines caller ID not working usually when it rains but thats been good for a while now.

The engineers at my exchange seem to be serial fiddlers

Its still faster then sky so ....

Re: lost 1mb off my d/l

Hi stu_uk,

So I'd say you've thoroughly checked your internal wiring then ;-)

Do you have another router you could try to see if it's a router specific thing?

I think you're coming to the end of the road on this one.

If you'd like, you can PM me your phone number that the broadband is connected to and I can check the noise margin your connection should be on. Could maybe squeeze another 1mb of downstream sync your way.

Thanks

Paul

Re: lost 1mb off my d/l

Nice work - glad it's back to normal Stu

Paul - any chance you could get BT to move their exchange a tad closer to my house please? I'd love to get the kind of speeds some of the guys here see

I find burning the local exchange down might get it moved closer to you but the loss of service might be a bummer

Im tempted to visit my local exchange with a box of cakes to stop them buggering about

Looks like Paul has changed you to a lower db profile, probably 3db, and the line noise has increased a bit since then.

As you probably know, O2, in common with most other ISPs hasn't implemented SRA (seamless rate adaptation), or at least, I'm not aware they have, so your router will negotiate a set sync when resynced/rebooted for a given noise margin. Subsequently, as noise changes through the day, the sync will stay the same but the noise margin will shift.
