Firstly, welcome to Paul, Abhishek & Iqbal from O2. It's great to have you here. Whether you'll regret it in due course is another matter
![]() I migrated in from Sky a few months ago. Before Sky started DLM I had a downstream rate of about 3000kbs and upstream 380 (or so) kbs. About right for an attenuation of 58 - 59. After DLM, my downstream dropped to ~ 2500 and upstream rose to ~840. This is on ADSL2+ The noise margin is a rock-solid 6.5 My O2 connection gives me the same rates. Downstream rate is MUCH more important to me than upstream. Is there any way I can increase the downstream rate, either at the expense of upstream or by lowering the target noise margin? TIA Felix |

Re: Improving download speed
Hi Felix
Thanks for your post. We’re absolutely glad that we are now on O2User and will be supporting as much as we can. With regards to your query it would be really helpful if you post your complete stats from your O2 router. http://192.168.1.254 > Broadband connection > DSL connection > Details (on right top corner) * make sure that you’re logged in with Administrator as username and serial number as password which can be found underneath your O2 router. Just to comment generally on the stats you’ve mentioned, I guess you’re 4-4.5 km (approx) away from the exchange. Yes, lowering the noise margin can increase the download speeds but by doing this your line wont be as stable as it is on 6db (default NM). Well you can definitely try that by calling our customer services @ 0800 230 0202 . I’m assuming that you have checked the speeds with test socket (socket behind the face plate) and eliminated all the internal wiring faults. Let me know if you need more help. Iqbal |

Re: Improving download speed
Hi Iqbal,
Thanks for the speedy reply. My stats are: DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 837 / 2,472 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 16.5 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 36.0 / 61.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.0 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 544 / 57,930 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 544 / 14 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 57,632 / 5 I have a filtered faceplate with a minimum run to the modem/router I'll try calling about the noise margin. Re: Improving download speed
Well I hope you get the result you're looking for but a high attenuation line isn't likely to be a good candidate for a reduced noise margin. That's because a high attenuation line will generally have quite a large noise margin swing through the day as it is more susceptible to induced noise, crosstalk etc. If the swing is too great the router will have too little noise margin to ensure a stable connection and uncorrupted throughput i.e. the router may drop out and resync or your actual throughput will be low due to data resends.
See how it goes - you may be lucky. |

Re: Improving download speed
Hi Saturday,
Thanks for the response. In fact my noise margin on O2 is very stable - it varies by + or - 0.5 dB over the day (as shown by RouterStats Lite). When I was on Sky the variation was much, much greater, as you suggest. I'll try getting the noise margin adjusted in due course and post back. Regards, Felix |

Re: Improving download speed
Hi Felix
Let me know if you've noticed a change in speeds after getting NM changed. Also post your stats here if you can. Iqbal |
