Using o2 wireless box as a modem only.

Hi all,

I'm planning to move over to o2 broadband next month and I understand that I'm provided with o2's wireless box 2. I would very much like to use my own router as it runs on custom linux firmware and is much more versatile. Now my router is a standalone and does not come with a build in adsl modem(using cable in the past).

My question is can I configure the wireless box to act as a modem only and completely disable it's router and switch capabilities so then when I connect the Ethernet cable to the router I will get my actual ip address and not a lan address.

Alternatively if this is not possible, I plan to get my own adsl modem and hook it up to my router. I do believe this is possible right?

Thanks for your help. =)

Re: Using o2 wireless box as a modem only.

I would think you can do it but it might be less hassle to go with just a simple DSL modem?

At the least I think you would need to -

Turn off the firewall and any IDS features from the CLI (I've posted before that there are some things you cannot do/won't take in the GUI);

And / or turn on the Any/Any forwarding rule;

And / or enable the DMZ feature(? Not sure if that's there on all models - mine was the business router);

Disable the DHCP server;

The first and last items in theory, I think, should be enough but others will undoubtedly correct me if I'm mistaken.

And be aware that security upgrades could turn on features you didn't necessarily want enabled.

Oh and good choice on O2.

Yeh I figured using my own adsl2+ modem would be easier but if I could save cash then why not. (I'm a student after all).

On dsl modems, any recommendations? I was looking at d-link's dsl 320b.

Honestly I don't know when it comes to just modems, but if you're planning on gaming then following on from the logic of Netgears being generally better than most things I'd say to look if they do one?

Re: Using o2 wireless box as a modem only.

Hi,

Just wondering if you had any luck with this? I plan aon doing the same thing. I have a dedicated router that I would much rather use than the one built in to the O2 wireless box.

Thanks,
Adam
