Strange happenings ?
Well, where to start, with a bit of history I guess so here goes :-
I joined O2 approx 6 months ago and have enjoyed a stable 17.5 meg connection up until a couple of weeks ago when things went to pot. I started getting regular disconnects every few minutes in the evenings and on reconnect the stats would be all over the place, att varying from 22 to 26, sync anywhere between 6meg and 17.5. Those who know me from Skyuser will realise I have a bit of an idea about these sort of things and therefore I have done all the usual things, master socket, filters etc etc. During this process I also tried a different router ( the old Sky DG834GT ) which seems to have solved the issue, however :- When I get home in the evening the WAN uptime is only a couple of hours or so but the logs show no disconnects and my ip has stayed the same and also the sync speeds are exactly the same making me suspect it hasnt lost sync at all. Also on checking attached devices my pc alway has 192.168.0.5, blu ray 06 wii or xbox never appears in the list and the mrs laptop always gets 04. This is despite ip reservation not being set. Any ideas anyone ? The router has been flashed to V1.03.23. I've got the DMT tool installed if that will help with diagnosis. Cheeers Dave |

Re: Strange happenings ?
My DG834GT behaves the same:
My current stats show a LAN time in the thousands of hours but a WAN of 1.5. I've had no disconnect. Keeping the last assigned IP address for a device is normal for most routers. New devices attached will start with the lowest IP available and if you keep adding them will take up the higher ones in order if your PC/laptop etc aren't attached. The kids xbox doesn't appear in the list of attached devices when in use. HTH |

Re: Strange happenings ?
does the router issue a lease time period for each IP? that could explain some of the ghostly goings on

Re: Strange happenings ?
Yeah DHCP - or dynamically assigned - IP addresses are given out for anything from 8 hours to 8 days by networking equipment.
It's based on the MAC address of the network card attaching to it - so if you click start, Run and type CMD on your windows machine to bring up a black "DOS box" and in there, type IPCONFIG /ALL, you will see a load of info, one of which is MAC address. That is unique to your machine* and is made up of two bits - a manufacturer code and a random compoment. You will also see something relating to IP Address and DHCP information such as when the lease expires. At 80% of the time, it'll request the same address again. When you add new, never before seen kit, the DHCP server (the device or computer handing out the addresses) will find the next available free address, usually try to ping it to see if it is available and then assign it if it is. A quick example is attached (forgive my having to obfuscate some of the details but it's not my system I've taken it from). ![]()
