Throughput Issues @ Sheffield, Broomhill.

Looks like I have a throughput issue with my connection.

DownStream Connection Speed 21190 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 2515 kbps

using Netgear DGN2000 with DGteam firmware. Upload throughput rate is consistently in the 2Mbps region. Downstream throughput is all over the place. Connected to test socket, ethernet direct to pc. Havent had any issues for over 1year. Called o2 support and no issues with network. Nothing on service status.

Three speed tests performed in a row showing throughput variance.

Has been like this for a few days now. Completely variable.

Below is a normal result for my connection:

Has shown 16000-18000 consistently on mybroadbandspeed.co.uk for the last year and a half whilst with BE and now o2. Router stats not showing any issues with line errors or odd figures on SNR, Attenuation, etc.

Anyone else having issues in Sheffield?

Hi LexusUK,

Looks like you've done all the basic internal checks which is good.

Have you tired your speed tests on other websites? Might be worth while testing 'real' throughput here: thinkbroadband :: Download Test Files

Watch the file transfer and see how that goes.

Re: Throughput Issues @ Sheffield, Broomhill.

Yeah already done. Speeds are consistent with the results I'm seeing on myBBspeed.co.uk and speedtest.net (4mbps-10mbps variable). On think broadband test files I was seeing transfer rates of 300-400KB/s. Normal maximum throughput is more like 2.0MB/s - 2.3MB/s so definitely something funky going on.

I've raised it with O2 support. Running 24 hour line monitoring. Will be updated this evening.

Still awaiting a call back from tech. (second line). Throughput is truely terrible now.

Still stable sync rate of 20Mbps+ down. Interestingly my neighbours have also reported a throughput fault with their Virgin connection. They have 18Mbps sync which is stable. Throughput is identical to mine.

Sorry to waste anyones time. Say hello to one dead Netgear router.

Switched back to o2 box and:

back to normal. Ethernet ports 1 to 3 not allowing data transfer gave it away. Finally I can stream again!

Morning LexusUK,

I'm glad you got to the bottom of that one. Sounded a bit bizarre to begin with but makes sense now you've found the root cause of the problem.

Thanks for letting everyone know what the problem was

Paul
