What is the best router?

Hi, I am looking for some information on what would be the best choice of router to buy, if it is possible. I currently have the O2 wireless box II. I generally have quite a good connection with O2, every now and then though my connection just will stop working, unresponsive pages, even google. However the network icon in my system tray is still lit (no red cross lol) yet nothing works. Sometimes that icon does show a yellow icon which says " identifying... no internet access" To resolve them problems a simple reboot of the router works. (pressing the power button on the back) However having to do that can get a bit tedious. So was wondering if it was perhaps the router itself being the problem.

What kind of routers are the best to buy for the O2 connections?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Luke

Re: What is the best router?

Really depends on where you're coming from in terms of how you want to use your access.

Gaming-wise, you can't really go wrong with a Netgear - something like a reflashed Sky 834GT. You'll find lots of posts on here about people having issues with game when using O2 (Thomson) routers.

However, these routers are limited by things like the number of firewall rules that you can enter (20, I think from memory - which sounds a lot but really isn't*).

Also, they don't have some of the more advanced features of others such as telnet access, guest wifi etc.

But generally, I'd say for most people, the Netgear makes a good choice - solidly reliable, good support, relatively easy and intuitive web interface etc.

*If you're particularly techy, you could always use a router like this with an any/any rule passed through to a dedicated firewall but that's pretty deep stuff.
