Wired desktop disconnecting

Hi, I am having problems with my desktop computer disconnecting from the internet. Now I know this might not be a o2 router problem or something but thought I would ask anyway.

At random intervals of the day my connection on my wired desktop computer just drops out. However on my laptop, which is hooked up to the same router using the wireless connection is fine. That connection does not drop out and runs fine. My desktop is running Windows 7 and the only way to fix this issue is a router reboot. I have tried disabling and re enabling the network card, using the windows 7 troubleshoot and that doesnt work either. Tried flushing the dns and the obvious one, restarting the computer, nothing seems to work. The internet icon in the system tray just gets a yellow icon

Does anyone have any ideas or know how to resolve this, my only answer is a new network card?

Thanks

Re: Wired desktop disconnecting

? is the lease expiried on the IP? get a command prompt run - cmd - type ipconfig(space)/all that will tell you when the lease expiries at the bottom of the listing.

If it does expire log into your router and set your desktop to use the same IP all the time.

Hope that helps.

Hey Stu, cheers for that info mate. I just did the ipconfig and noticed the lease is to expire 10th August (tomorrow) What is the lease? I have never heard of this before :|

I logged into the router like you said and checked the box that says all the time. Now it says this...

Always use the same address: Yes

DHCP Lease Time: 49 days, 2:43:06 - does this mean it will do it again in 49 days time?

Cheers again

Re: Wired desktop disconnecting

The lease is how long the router assigns that particular IP address to your connected device.

Its a failsafe to make sure it doesnt run out of IP addies if you had numerous wireless and wired devices with reserved IP's.

Its also v useful to reserve an IP for use in port forwarding.

Have you checked in your network cards props to make sure the power saving is turned off to? that might explain the dropping of the signal.

Ok, so does that mean my IP address is changing when that lease is running out? Also when you mention my network card, I assume you are meaning on the laptop, correct?

Thanks

Re: Wired desktop disconnecting

If IP addy might change when the lease expires it depends on what other devices are connected to the router at the time, also if you have reserved the IP for your wired PC the IP will not change.

Id check both the and desktop props to check the energy saving setting is disabled, as its enabled by default.

Re: Wired desktop disconnecting

Ok I had done what you had said before, so I thought, this is screenshot of what my router settings are...

Is that correct?

If so my connection did the same tonight, I tried ipconfig /all and the lease expire date was there etc. Do I have to change anything else after setting that in my router for the setting to activate on the current connection?

ALSO - I just tried a ipconfig /all after resetting router, so I could get back online and it still shows this

Thanks

Re: Wired desktop disconnecting

There appears to be a disconnection between the lease time being given by the router and the one being used by your laptop.

It might be worth, as a test, setting your wired connection to a fixed IP - use the same settings as in the screen shot you sent. Because it's already excluded in the router, it shouldn't be at any risk of being given out a second time.

Re: Wired desktop disconnecting

Dont worry mine states the same when I do an ipconfig but my router states "Always use the same IP address: Yes DHCP Lease Time: Infinite "

? maybe its a bug in xp?

I can have my router on for days and I check the connected time its way over 24hrs....

I think either I have worded something wrong or you have misunderstood? It is NOT the laptop losing connection, it is the desktop. (which is the wires connection)
