Small query.

Hey, quick query into a piece of information on the event log from the O2 router. My connection as of late has been very good with O2, although I have taken a static Ip on board, for the extra £5 I thought it was worth a go. Anyway I was browsing away as normal, using messengers etc like I have been doing for the past god knows how many years. Anyway my connection went down for like 1 minute and just came back online as normal. I had a quick look in the event log on the router under SuperUser and noticed this... which I had never seen before...

xDSL linestate up (ITU-T G.992.5; downstream: 15454 kbit/s, upstream: 1291 kbit/s; output Power Down: 18.5 dBm, Up: 12.0 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 25.5 dB, Up: 12.5 dB; snr Margin Down: 6.5 dB, Up: 6.5 dB)

Is that perhaps something to do with my connection going down?

Anyone shed some light on that?

Cheers,

Luke

Re: Small query.

Hi there,

Can you confirm when you experience these drop outs, does your broadband and internet light switches off as well? If you’re getting these more often then I’d suggest a hard reset (holding the pin until red power light) and swapping the filer.

Also can you advice what connection type are you using (wired/wireless?)

Abs

Hi Abs,

thank you for responding. I can confirm that the internet light on the router was going out when these drop outs were occurring. I did however call O2 last night and speak to someone, however the main system was apparently down so there was nothing the lady could do with my line. She went through some quick questions about my set up but once I told her I was using the O2 supplied equipment, and that I am plugged into the test socket at all times it pretty much answered her questions lol.

I have just phoned O2 again to ask about the drop outs from last night and the agent who I spoke to said it did seem to be the line that was the issue. It does seem to have stabled itself out too. He also went ahead and got more out my router, he got my connection up to 18.1 meg, he did however have to lower my noise margin from the default of 6 down to 3. So said IF I do start to get intermittent connection just phone them back and have it set back to default.

But to answer your questions abs. I have swapped the filter around a few weeks back and the connection is wired.

Thanks,

Luke

Re: Small query.

Hi Luke,

One of our system and O2 website was down for maintenance yesterday, this was a planned outage for updating our new package changes effectively. I’m sorry for any inconvenience it may have caused.

Glad to know that the intermittent connection issue has been resolved, I’d suggest monitoring your connection and posting the router stats if it occurs again.

I noticed you mentioned that the noise margin has been decreased from 6dB (default) to 3dB. Now what I think is that it should have been increased to 9dB instead for a better stabilization rate.

Keep us posted with any updates!

Abs

Will do Abs, I think the reason he decreased my noise margin was to try get a better connection, which it did. It does seem like the 3 outages last night were on O2's side and not mine so hopefully all is resolved now

Out of curiosity, what router stats should I post, IF it occurs again, and how, in case I need to do something specific.

Thanks,

Luke

Re: Small query.

Just follow these steps for getting the full router stats:-

http://192.168.1.254 > Toolbox > user management (login with SuperUser as username and the password is either "O2Br0ad64nd" or the serial number of your router) > Broadband connection > DSL Connection > Details.

Let me know if you've any hiccups!

Re: Small query.

Hi enabled,

While the 3db noise margin may have been applied to squeeze a little more speed out of your line, it can introduce some instability.

As Abs has mentioned, keep an eye on your connection. Should the dropouts continue, I'd get the noise margin reduced back to 6db. That should stop the dropouts. If it doesn't, 9db could be considered.

Let us know how you get on.

Paul
