Help on Router Stats - good or bad!! Router is rebooting after a few days
Hi guy and girls,
Some help please. below are my router stats, after a few days my router seem to be re-boot itself, is this common or correct? is there anything i or o2 can do to improvement internet connectivity as it seems a little slow. I have already re-built my pc fresh, so it's clean. Many Thanks DSL Connection Link Information Uptime: 1 day, 14:58:47 DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,408 / 22,525 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 133.80 / 2.65 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.0 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.0 / 11.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.5 / 5.5 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 243 / 12,105 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 243 / 14 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 3,069,602 / 9 |

Re: Help on Router Stats - good or bad!! Router is rebooting after a few days
You've got a lovely short line so your sync speed is fantastic.
Your noise margin is a little low in those stats and if it is dropping a lot lower then this can cause a stuttering connection or even disconnections. Upstream nm significantly lower than downstream can indicate a filtering problem though your high sysnc would suggest that's unlikely. Either reboot at the noisiest time of day which will give you a lowest noise margin level of ~6db or give O2 a call and get them to put you on a 9db profile. Although this will reduce your sync by a couple of meg you'll still have near on a 20 meg connection so that's not going to be a problem. It should give you a more stable connection though if indeed there is a problem. Just wondering - are you wireless? With your great connection it seems unlikely you'd think it "a little slow" if you're wired - wireless can be another matter though. Last edited by Saturday; 10-11-10 at 04:47 PM.. |

![]() I have a laptop which is connected via wireless (802.11g) and another P.C which is wired. Coming to think of it, it seems OK with the wired connection, just the laptop. hmm!!! I spoke to O2 yesterday and they advised me that a firmware update was applied to my wireless box III, hence my router re-booting a few times. This updated was applied on sunday 7th Nov automatically. He checked this systems for this info. Here is another copy of today's stats, doesn't seem to have changed. I have a very stable connection, if i'm right in saying so ![]() There are Errors at the botton of the stats are they ok? any thing to worry about? ![]() DSL Connection Link Information Uptime: 2 days, 15:29:45 DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,408 / 22,525 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 424.01 / 10.33 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.0 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.0 / 11.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 3.5 / 5.5 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 441 / 23,237 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 441 / 22 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 3,069,684 / 13 |

Re: Help on Router Stats - good or bad!! Router is rebooting after a few days
Personally I'd want my upstream a bit higher than 3.5db - easily achieved through a reboot this evening (or at least should be).
Your connection is great but wireless can be very flaky and will rarely cope with the sort of speed you have. You may improve things by experimenting with a different wireless channel to try and avoid any local interference on the frequency you are currently using. No, nothing to worry about with the CRC error level. See Router stats (errors) explained though again, that low upstream noise margin is generating that slightly high number of upstream CRC errors, though taken over a period of nearly 3 days, they are not very high. The HEC errors are high though and you need to check whether these are new errors generated since the last reboot or stored errors covering a longer time period. As suggested, reboot (power the router down then back up) this evening and see what the initial noise margins are plus the HEC count. |

Thank you,
At what sort of time should I re-boot it? once I do it I will post results. |

Re: Help on Router Stats - good or bad!! Router is rebooting after a few days
Typically around 6pm is as noisy as it gets in the winter months. Reboot around then to get your initial values then check again an hour or so later. If the noise margin has dropped significantly (by more than 1db), repeat.

Great Will do.
One more question: do you know what this is: Home > Home Network > Interfaces > LocalNetwork TCP/IP Configuration Auto-IP Enabled: |

I don't use the O2 Box router but I'd guess that's its terminology for automatically assigning an IP address to devices on your LAN rather than manually setting or fixed IPs.

Ok here's stats after re-booting just now

Re: Help on Router Stats - good or bad!! Router is rebooting after a few days
Well it looks like those HEC errors are stored so no need to worry about them.
Very odd noise margin results though: they've not changed to the O2 default following the reboot which is very unusual. This either means you have a line/wiring issue (try fitting a new filter if you have one and ensure every connected device has one to itself), your router firmware loves your short line so much that it's decided 3db upstream is fine and over-ridden the O2 default (unlikely but then your attenuation is fabulously low) or O2 have your profile set up strangely. When I've seen a low upstream in the past it has always been a wiring/filter or router issue. Check your wiring/filters first and then, if still no change, give O2 a call and ask them what profile you're on. Explain that your upstream noise margin is "locked" at 3.0db. Or just don't worry about it if your connection seems otherwise fine. ![]() |
