Re: router stats - line speed

Yeah - I didnt mean the drop cable, and we have one cable that runs to the phone from the master socket - but it is wired direct to the back of the faceplate.

So, it would be a case of disconnecting the faceplate, reconnecting the new faceplate, and attaching the single in use extension, then plugging the router cable into the front of the socket?

This seems easy enough, I guess the only issue I have now is making sure that the correct colour wires are conected to the correct slots in the new faceplate, but the instructions give a very good account of how to do this, and I guess its only like changing a plug/power socket/Light switch.

Thanks for the link as well.

OK, getting clearer

Your extension cable should not be connected to the backplate. It will be causing problems so disconnect it.

If you want to continue using the extension, buy a new filtered faceplate (e.g. the XTE-2005), remove your existing faceplate, disconnect your extension cable from the backplate without disturbing the drop cable, connect the extension cable to the back of the new faceplate and fit it to the old backplate. Job done.

If the phone has been wired by a professional then the pair used will be as in the instuctions I referred to. However, considering the extension cable has been fitted to the backplate you'd better check i.e. use the same pair that are wired to the backplate.

If you don't need the extension then just disconnecting it from the backplate and folding the wires out the way will give much the same result as fitting a new faceplate. Then plug a filter into the front socket and your phone and router into that.

Re: router stats - line speed

Ta Saturday

I need the one extension (I didnt think of it as an extension but the main phone line, so its me causing the confusion), so I have ordered the faceplate you linked to, and the disposable tool for the IDC connections.

Just a case of replacing the faceplate with the new one and re-connecting the extension cable to the back of it (noting the colours/numbers of the wires), then plugging the router in the front.

I did think of just pulling the extension cable out of the back of the faceplate and the master socket, and adding an R110? jack to it so I could plug it into the filter, but the cable is nowhere near long enough for this.

Thanks for all your help on this - delivery will take a day or two, so once thats sorted I will post back with my results.

When I have done it though - what is the best time of day to re-sync my router to get the best results?

Thanks again

Depends what you mean by best. For highest sync reboot at the quietest time of the day - usually in the morning when it is light. For best stability reboot at the noisiest time of day - usually early evening when it is dark.

Re: router stats - line speed

Thanks matey - that makes sense.

I might do a re-sync early morning first, and see what speed I get and if its stable.

If there is an issue, I will do it again when it gets busy.

Re: router stats - line speed

Ok, so the new faceplate arrived on Friday Morning, and I fitted it that afternoon.

The connection speed has now jumped to 5meg, when synchronised in the late afternoon - will post full stats this afternoon!

Cheers Saturday for all your help!
