Re: o2router wired help !!
update
bought 5 port ethernet switch and had tiny luck I got connectivity for few minutes!! ![]() but since then have connected few minutes twice!! only so it is very intermetent i think i am on the right track except it is technical now. i think i need hub switch with power supply 7.5vdc/12vdc. i am not sure which one as i need only to connect one port but definately the problem is juice related on the ac power!! cat 5 in my opinion cannot connect at 15 meter in domestic environment with domestic o2 router!! i will be grateful if network sevvy guys can help on the switch with options due to budget restraints . thanks for all the help1 |

Re: o2router wired help !!
I suspect the cable is damaged. CAT5 is good for 100m.
Bet any money it's one of three things - the cable is bent too sharply at some point (meant to be a minimum radius of 7-10cm), the cable is damaged somewhere or the cable is not crimped properly at one end. And...even if home routers didn't follow the 'full' CAT5 standard you would still get MUCH more than 15m. In fact, by your 7m estimate they'd have to run at 7% of normal capacity. You really believe home routers only do this? They'd be shot down for stating CAT5 compliancy. Voltage really isn't so important when you introduce high frequency but cable integrity is. I've run cables for friends 30-40m between buildings before with no problems and that was connected to a Sky Netgear router. You haven't said how this cable was made? I recommend getting hold of a long, pre-made, cable, and running it along the floor upstairs. I can tell you that of the 100-150 thousand network points I've been involved in being installed (not directly, but by colleagues - I just designed the server back end, including voice and instant messaging traffic which needs good connections) over the last year, I've only ever seen one faulty line card in a router. The others were poor configuration or cabling.

Re: o2router wired help !!
tony1044 thanks for your replies now the update!!
My problem has been that the meter was showing continuity 100% at both ends!! therefore both cable and plug should be ok!! Infact i crimped 3 times and had continuity all times!! In the interim tried switch/hubs no joy! Got 15 meter ready patched cable and connected via stairs got connection! I removed the rj45 plugs from both ends and punched the wires in the rj45 wall module!!and got connection!! I have to blame the tools!!! I take my hat off to you! thanks again my 13 yr old is over the moon as he can watch internet video!! he said tony is a star!! perhaps this will help others.thanks for all your help.![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: o2router wired help !!
Ah I should've picked up on what you said about checking with the meter - it will almost always show ok except for an out-and-out break.
The problems tend to come with the high frequencies used by CAT5. Glad it's working for you mate and always happy to help in whatever small way I can ![]()
