Potential upload speeds at new installation

We are considering getting an O2 broadband connection for business use. We are on the Shepshed (leics) exchange which is enabled of LLU for o2/Be

Currently we have an ADSL Max connection via BT wholesale (Zen) which gives us about 5 mb/s download and ~600k up.

The estimated speed for an O2/Be LLU connection to our site is 7 Mb/s download, i.e. only a bit faster than BT.

Can someone tell me, perhaps from experience of the service in the outer reaches of Shepshed, whether the download speed will be that low and more importantly what is the likely upload speed. Does the upload speed degrade in a similar proportion to the download speed?

Can someone also confirm if O2 offers an official ADSL broadband service for business. I have found occasional references on the web but nothing on o2's website, only details of the home service.

APS

Re: Potential upload speeds at new installation

O2 doesn't offer a business broadband product any more.

I wouldn't agree that 7meg is "only a bit faster" than 5meg. If that is what you were to get then that would be pretty good considering you are using the same line. Most people find that they get something around a 20% improvement when they move away from ADSL Max - rarely more and sometimes not as much as that. You would find however that your upstream sync would be higher at around the 1meg mark on the standard product and maybe 1.5meg on their top package (with a small hit to downstream sync).

The sync you get is ultimately down to your line condition, either BT line or home/office phone wiring. If you can access your line attenuation and post this then that would give an indication of what is possible.

Re: Potential upload speeds at new installation

Thank you for the reply. I am a little confused about your statement "Most people find that they get something around a 20% improvement when they move away from ADSL Max" I am not sure how this ties in with the up to 20/24 Mb/s rate that is usually advertised for ADSL2 that I believe O2/Be offer on LLU exchanges.

20% more than the 8 mb/s max for ADSL Max, is less than 10??

Re: Potential upload speeds at new installation

If your line quality is the limiting factor i.e. you're only able to get something significantly less than the 8meg potential of ADSL Max, then you can expect to get something of the order of a 20% improvement if you switch to O2's ADSL2+ LLU product.

If ADSL Max is the limiting factor i.e. your line will support higher speeds than ADSL Max can deliver then the improvement may well be substantially more than 20%.

Line attenuation (essentially line length) followed by line noise are the determining factors for determining potential ADSL speeds for any given ADSL type.

To give an example: my line attenuation will support a little under 8meg on ADSL Max but achieves 12.5meg on Sky's ADSL2+ and 14meg on O2's.

See here for a more detailed explanation.

Re: Potential upload speeds at new installation

I would also say

it depends what router you use

i found that the o2 box is not great for holding high upload sync.
