Strange speeds.
Greetings folks,
Over the last few days i have been having very strange speed issues with my line, I am getting high ping times in games (95+ on uk based servers) I thought this might be due to me using home plugs, So over the past week i have been keeping a close eye on the speed of the line, No speed is all over the place from 11Mbps to 30+Mbps Now i have tested via the homeplugs and wireless and also direct cable connection and its the same, These are my line stats : Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,308 / 20,241 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 13.5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.2 / 6.5 Here is a speed test i just ran over the homeplug system. ![]() Now most of the time it will stay around 3 - 5 Mbps with spikes of 12 - 25Mbps I have tested new filters, dsl cables, routers and the test port, The line its self is fine and when doing tracerts to google i am getting times of up to 450Ms on hop 6 So this looks to be more of a network issue but is any one else in easy belfast having the same issue ? Kind Regards Steven

Re: Strange speeds.
Not possible to get a 30meg throughput if you're syncing at 20241kbps.
Speedtesters are notoriously inaccurate, none more so than speedtest.net. There are better ones but the results need to be taken as indicative only, whichever one you use. Possibly better would be to use a large download from a known good server e.g. Microsoft but even then you'd have to factor in where it is based etc. Also, all a tracert is telling you is how long the server is taking to notify you, not necessarily how long it is taking to pass through "legitimate" traffic. Many servers are set to not respond at all or with low priority to tracerts. If there is a routing problem though, you might find a way round it by forcing an ip change (will sometimes put you on a completely new range which routes differently). Other than high ping times in games, what else makes you think you have an issue? What about pings to other servers e.g. bbc.co.uk? Last edited by Saturday; 10-09-11 at 02:47 PM.. |

It was funny getting a finding like that lol, But also when i was downloading files i was getting transfer rates from 150Kbps to 2 - 2.5Mbps But any how with regards to speeds turns out it was my Antivirus, I disabled this and was getting speeds around 17Mbps stable, Never seen a Av do that before, Needless to say its changed !
