Got connected to O2 today

Admin note: moved from tutorials forum

Hi Saturday
Thanks for the help tutorials.
I got connected to O2 today, managed to log into my O2 wireless router using the SuperUser account but I still dont see the detailed router stats like noise margin and attenuation. All I see is the following stats:

Uptime: 0 days, 3:07:56
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,287 / 12,606
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Here are my current speedtests, can you help me locate the detailed stats and also what do you think of the speedtests I have just run??

I don't have an O2 Box in front of me and can't recall where you find the stats - sorry. However, try clicking this link - should bring them up.

Re: Got connected to O2 today

Thanks Saturday, worked brilliantly, here are some of my stats.
I restarted the router to see if it increased the sync speed, but still the overall download speed seems to be low. How long does it take before I see the actual speeds?
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,287 / 13,515
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 16.0 / 31.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 6.5
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 81,907
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 9
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 85 / 8

Latest speed test results

I'm not sure I understand your question - those are your actual speeds

You are syncing at 13515kbps which is just a shade low for your attenuation. The "missing" couple of megs will be down to line noise.

The big problem though is that your speedtest results are only half your sync whereas they should be ~85% with the 15% shortfall being down to transmission overheads i.e. your speedtest results should be ~11400kbps.

There are many possible reasons for why your throughput (speedtest) is low for your sync - with an O2 cause being the least likely. As I said earlier, I suspect you are connecting wirelessly and this should be eliminated first before looking further. You haven't responded though.

Re: Got connected to O2 today

Thanks Saturday for the reply. I was infact connected wirelessly. I was trying to connect the PS3 wired and use my PC wirelessly to improve the online gaming, but have gone back to the wired connection to PC and wirelessly for the PS3.
With wired I am using a hard wired extension in the upstairs study, I used the same with Sky and used to sync at about 14-16Mbps.
Here are the new stats and speed tests after wired connection. Should I expect any improvement on this after 10 days DLM period is over. I have looked into the filtered plate option but got scared somehow, so would like to stick to the extension for the time being until get some serious motivation to mess things up.

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 16.0 / 31.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

No, DLM doesn't work like that. If your SN Margin is showing at around 6db, that's all the speed you're going to get. Rebooting the router at a quiet time of day (line noise-wise) will give you a higher sync which will hold through the day at the expense of the noise margin.

That said, the 11.5meg you currently have isn't shabby by any means. Although improving your wiring may give you 3 or 4meg more, do you need it? Also, you're not capped so any improvements you make will have an instant impact so there's no hurry/time limit for when you try to improve things.

The main thing is, we can now see that your throughput issue was down to wireless as suspected.

I tried to be a little adventurous and isolated the bell wire and the sync has improved by about 1 MBps but still don't feel confident enough to go ahead and try the filtered plate. I guess as long as get a stable connection at these speeds, I wont have much problems.
My main issue is to be able to play online on PS3 without any lags or dropouts, it seems to be holding wirelessly at the moment. I am really tempted to buy a long Ethernet cable and somehow take it round to my PS3. The wireless box does stream my media to PS3 as well but struggled in terms of frames freezing occasionally.

You were spot on about the throughput due to wireless!

Here are new stats

The you should try the bell wire removal/ Iplate as well and see if it shows improvement in your connection as well

Could be the bell wire removal but could just be down to the line noise level at the time of resyncing (note your noise margin is lower). Fitting a replacement filtered faceplate is really straightforward - all you have to do is push fit your extension wires to the correct terminals and screw it on to the backplate. Note though that filtered faceplates only really help with problems caused by extension wiring. If you don't have extension wiring then there's no point in a filtered faceplate. Without extension wiring, removing the bell wire is sufficient - or fit an I-plate if you want to waste money.

Ethernet is far superior to wireless but don't forget that you can also run Ethernet over the house electricity supply. A pair of Homeplugs (~£50) will give you the performance of an ethernet cable, without the cable.
