Connected Today

Hello Everyone,

Got connected today which was fairly painless, considering I'd forgotten to print the settings for using your own router.

I remembered most of the settings but not the changes to in VCI and mulitplex method, O2 support quickly diagnosed the problem, hopefully I'll not need them too much.

I'm currently synced at 16331 and 1151 with the following results.

Does this look about right for a line attentuation of 22db/4db and noise of 5db?

What simple changes are most effective, would a filtered socket be a worthwhile investment, or changing to DGTeam firmware.

Your speedtest is fine for your sync but your sync is a little low for your attenuation - most probably a slight noise problem. With that attenuation you could expect 18+meg.

To see whether a filtered faceplate would make a difference, try a comparison connection with your test socket which is hidden inside your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5 socket). If the sync/noise margin rises then that's what you'd get. Filtered faceplates are always a good idea though so personally I'd fit one anyway. You might consider removing your ring wire instead.

I've connected to the test socket and this has given me a sync over 17000, so it should be worthwhile getting a filtered faceplate.

Ring wire is now disconnected, and the sync has improved slightly to 16,673/1163 kbps. I'm not sure if this is due to the removal of the ring wire as oddly enough the noise on the line has increased to 6db/6db.

Whilst this performance is a massive improvement over ADSL it's not as good as I was hoping for, previously always synced at 8128/448 with a speedtest of just under 7000 kbps as I'm only 700m from the exchange.

Was hoping for closer to the advertised 20 mbps and 2.5 mbps advertised for the Pro package.

Do you have any further suggestions, I understand the Texas Instruments Chipset in my router isn't happiest with the O2 exchange hardware could this be the problem?

6db is the default noise margin that O2 uses. Every time you reboot your router it should sync using 6db regardless of what it was prior to the reboot i.e. the router will sync at the highest speed it can for a noise margin of 6db.

ADSL is a line length (and line quality) dependent technology. You may be 700m in a straight line from your exchange but I'm afraid your line isn't taking that route - they rarely do. Your attenuation shows your line is actually double that at ~1400m long.

O2 will move your upstream to 2.5meg once the line testing (DLM) has finished. You will see a drop of ~1meg though in your downstream in consequence. If you don't want this then O2 will move your upstream back to 1.3meg if you ask.

No, I don't think there's too much more you can do other than fit a faceplate. You're near the maximum sync possible for your attenuation. A Broadcom based router may give you a few hundred k more speed but that's all.

Unless you need the extra features of Pro, you could consider downgrading to Premium, for the same downstream sync but a fairly hefty cash saving.
