Low sync speed

Hi. This is my first post, so please bare with me.
I recently joined o2 from VirginMedia and, when I registered with o2, it stated that I used to getting around 6MB.

However, now I'm connected, I'm only getting around 2.5MB, Sometimes even at 250kps. I was hoping that as weeks go by, the speed may improve.

Here's are my stats

Uptime: 1 day, 0:06:30

DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,079 / 1,745

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 16.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 33.5 / 55.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 12.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 19 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 27 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 49 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 915 / 44,036

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 915 / 734

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 51,775 / 642

Hope you can share with any info on what maybe causing my poor broadband speed.

Kind Regards,

Re: Maximum upload speed

You have a line attenuation of 55 which means that your line is very long from your house to the exchnage and/or that you have a problem with the internal wiring of your line in your house.

Which is also suggested with the very high noise margin that you seem to have a cap on your line possibly due to poor line quality.

You will need to get your stats from the test socket to see what may be going on.

I agree with Adrian:
  • if you've been with O2 for more than a couple of weeks, their form of DLM has set your downstream noise margin high to deal with a noisy line. Are you connected to your master socket (good) or via an extension (bad)?
  • run a comparison using your test socket (hidden inside your master socket if it is an NTE5). As your connection appears capped, if your noise margin rises then the problem is with your home wiring. If it stays the same then the problem is probably with your BT line.

Re: Low sync speed

Thank you for all your feedbacks, and sorry for this late reply.

As my house was built in the 80's, it does not have the NTE5 socket, but the old BT LJ2/3A socket. However, after reading certain posts regarding the old LJ2, it was suggested that removing the bell wire can help improve the BB speed. I did just that and did not notice any improvement.

Anyway, being an o2 mobile phone customer, I thought I could save money with them as they predicted that I should be getting around upto 7MB for under £10. Massive saving from £25 which I paid with Virginmedia 10MB. Sadly though, this is not the case.

I can't complain about o2 services, but getting around 2.5MB at best is not an option. On the bright side though, their upload speed is better than VM.

Just hope for the best really

Re: Low sync speed

I think you need to phone O2 and see if you can get the cap on the line removed and see if you get the line retested.

Although I would urge you to go for a filtered faceplate, they are so much better than mucking about with microfilters.

Re: Low sync speed

Will consider fitting a new faceplate, but which one do you recommend. And, can I install it myself?

However, I have contacted o2 and the service guy said that I should be getting around 7MB despite being 2.2 miles away from my exchange, because i am using the ADSL 2+ network instead of 2.5MB I'm currently on, which is the sort of speed you would expect on the standard ADSL.

He said that they will look into it, but I'm not too sure.

Re: Low sync speed

I'm afraid replacement filtered faceplates are only designed to fit NTE5 masters. Some people in your circumstances get an NTE5 fitted or do it themselves. If the latter, then to stay legal the new NTE5 needs to be fitted alongside the old master i.e wired in series.

Results similar (but not as good as a filtered faceplate) can be achieved through the disconnection of the ring wire - which you probably have connected.

Your attenuation limits you to a potential 5meg connection. 7meg is probably not achievable.

Re: Low sync speed

Thanks for your feedback Saturday.

Had another look at my BT sockets, and discovered that LJ2/3A are extensions which are connected to BT main cable as I do not have a master socket (LJ2/1A)

Anyway, my line attenuation is 55 and as you stated, I should be getting at least 5MB, not 2.5MB. I be happy with 5 but getting nowhere near that. I am getting a little annoyed now as I justed cancelled my VM broadband which I'm starting to regret.

If I can get any more juice out of o2 BB then I be happy, but at the moment, I'm not.

So.....what now?

Re: Low sync speed

Sadly, my 30 days cooling period is up.

Guess I will have to live with my substandard BB for the time being.
