WAN Telnet access and user updates for ST780WL

Hi guys,

Just another update with regards to a couple of things.

Firstly, I noticed that the ST780WL (business) router doesn't use the default O2 SuperUser password which limited a few things.

Secondly I wanted to be able to telnet into my router when I am working away.

The two things kind of roll into one another because the default Administrator account doesn't have remote telnet rights.

One thing - opening up ports etc increases your router attack profile for hackers. User strong passwords and if you don't understand any of this then don't do it. Not to preach, but I accept no responsibility for anything that could happen...

Ok...
  1. if you happen to use Windows Vista or 7 then you need to add the Telnet client from the add remove windows features.
  2. MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT CONFIG. If something goes wrong, you may have to hard reset the router to defaults (I speak from experience) so you need a config backup...
  3. Telnet into your router as the Administrator (default password is blank but you have changed that already, haven't you...? lol)
  4. If you want to see the current users type: user list
  5. Type user flush
  6. type saveall
  7. type exit to log off
  8. telnet back onto the router - there are NO users configured so type anything you want - e.g. Tony
  9. No password is needed so hit enter. NOTE - I had it screw up at this point and it wouldn't allow login either via telnet or web interface hence my warning to back up your config
  10. You should now be logged into the router.
  11. Type user list again and you should see NO users listed
  12. Type user add
  13. Put in your new user name (e.g. Tony) and hit enter
  14. Type a password and then confirm it
  15. When prompted for the user rights, type SuperUser (uppercase S and U) <- This is important...if you don't do this, then you have to go back and start again as you only create a user with lower rights...ergo DON'T user Administrator (do that next).
  16. The other information is not mandatory, so basically keep hitting enter
  17. Do another user add for Administrator and this time, when asked for the user rights, type Administrator (uppercase A)
  18. That's pretty much it for the user aspect, so type saveall and that's the user part configured.

To allow remote (WAN) telnet access, type the following:
  19. service system ifadd name=TELNET group=wan (again, note the uppercase letters)
  20. Type saveall to write the change - if you want to disable it, the command is service system ifdelete name=TELNET group=wan (don't forget the saveall)
  21. Telnet into your router...if you have a dynamic IP then you need something like DynDNS or my own favourite, DNSExit

One last point - the Administrator account cannot access the router via remote telnet...I won't tell you how to allow it nor would I recommend it.

Have fun.

Tony.
