Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

I'm missing something and I don't know what!!

I recently switched to O2 and connected using my Netgear DG834GT modem/router.
I set it up and was running without a problem. I am pleased with the service in general and I even got a slight increase in speed.

I have the O2 router, I purchased it as part of the offer at the time, but decided to use my Netgear because I liked the service it had given me with my old ISP and saw no reason to change so have not used it, it is still in the box

BUT here's the rub

My PC is on most of the day as I monitor a club site (monitor -- bit pompous that, I watch for new posts and help when I can).

If I leave my PC unattended for a while ( not yet been able to get a definite time period I guess around an hour), when I try to update the current page or go to another site I get the message " Try to connect to Firefox, Address not found" etc..

I overcome this by powering down my Netgear then powering up after a few seconds and I'm up and running again. If I am using the internet there has been no loss of connection at all.

Sorry if this not the correct part of the forum to pose this question, please forgive me and PLEASE help me with this irritation, though minor, still an irritation.
Thank you

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

It sounds like it could be a device is going into power down mode due to inactivity - most probably the network interface card (NIC) in the PC though could be the router. Check both of these: don't allow the PC to power manage the NIC and ensure that the "connect automatically as required" box is ticked in the router admin pages.

If that doesn't solve the problem then post back with what your router log is saying about the connection when this problem occurs.

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

This happened to me when I was Sky, I have no idea what was causing it except for it was the router as when i tried another one it worked fine.

Is your firmware up to date as Netgear have made a lot of updates recently, the last one being last Autumn. The current firmaware is V1.03.22

May be worth a try.

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

Awesome, I am now up and running with my old DG834GT with zero problems, My ping is to be slightly lower in game too which is a bonus!

One thing though, I was connected and received my o2 text confirmation on 12.02.2010 (friday) does that mean i am fully up and running and my speed is set or will there be more line testing? I wasn't sure...

"EDIT"
To sort of answer my own question, This morning i was disconnected and reconnected at 16meg (from 13) so i presume it is more line testing? Or at least i hope so anyway, More is usually better What do you think?

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

Hi

I have just applied for o2 premium....(not live yet)...but I want to set it so its ready.
The settings on the first page are great but not complete for me....

I want to use my Belkin router F5D8632-4_WW_1.00.07

Could someone please confirm....

What Wan type I should choose ie pppoe/pppoa/dynamic 1483....?

Also what should the MTU value be...?

Lastly what should the subnet mask be...?

Thank you for any help.

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

for belkin routers you will need to use a dynamic 1483 setting as the others need a username.

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

Hi
I've just joined o2 premium and the o2 wireless box works fine though speeds seem to be less than 6mb.

I've bought a belkin F5D8636-4 v2 to extend range but can't get it to connect to the adsl line. I've spent an hour on the phone with belkin and o2.

I've followed all the steps on this thread including spoofing the MAC address. I've tested the filters and tried plugging in directly to the bt socket and nothing seems to work.

I originally bought a netgear n router but couldn't get that to work so assumed it was faulty but now the belkin doesn't work either so not sure what to do next.

On the belkin router the adsl light flashes blue / amber intermittently.

On the control panel the adsl status just says GHS and nothing else. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

Seems unlikely that both new routers are faulty and as the O2 box works, it's not the connection. Seems more likely that you've not entered the correct details to connect the new routers.

The only other possibility I can think of is that you've used up your "allocated" router mac addresses so aren't being authenticated. To resolve this just leave the router connected for half an hour to an hour and see if the list gets refreshed to add the new router.
