Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

Thanks for this, it almost solves my problem. Hopefully you can help a little more?

I'm trying to use an Airport Extreme as the main router, I do not want to use it in Bridge mode only since a number of features are not available. My current router is a DG834GT which I intend to use as the modem (I also have an O2 router so could use this if necessary).

Should be below work for me? I can't seem to assign an IP and gateway to the DG834 once it's in modem only mode. Also, whch ports am I connecting via ethernet cable in the below setup, DG834 ethernet to Airport Ethernet or to the WAN?

I can make things work just about if I leave the DG834 in router mode, but then I have the issue of Double NAT and Double Firewall etc.

Thanks

For the sake of argument, lets say you give it 192.168.0.2 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and if required, a default gateway of 192.168.0.2 (yep - it's meant to be the same)

On the one you want to use to give out wireless (again I presume your Linksys in this case), give it an IP address of 192.168.0.1, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 192.168.0.2

Enable DHCP if required and change the scope to be from 192.168.0.3 to 192.168.0.254 with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and if you have the options the DNS server should 192.168.0.2

You may want to consider which one has the firewall running, too - having two at the perimeter of your network can be useful in a corporate environment, but in the home where you're not likely to need this it can just impact performance/is two places to set everything and then you run into issues of "which device is causing this problem?"

Personally, I'd turn it off on the Linksys and have the O2 router (again this is assuming the O2 box is the one connceting to O2) as that way nothing can bypass the firewall.

And remember to secure your wifi with WPA - don't use WEP: it's far to easy to crack now.

Connect the two by ethernet cable.

That should work.

Re: How to use your own router with O2 Broadband

Hi, I have ordered a sumvision SVW500D. I am not sure what settings to enter...

The most success I seem to get is if I choose MER.

The rest of the settings in that drop down menu never seem to allow me to connect. When I choose MER, eventually this happens in the settings

As you can see the gateway address isn't there.

Also, whenever I choose IPoA it requires me to enter a static IP address.

In the instructions manual, for MER it says:
4.3 Connection Mode 2: MER
If your ISP provides you with a Dynamic IP (i.e. you get a different IP address each time to access the Internet), select “MER” in “Encapsulation” field and “Auto obtain IP address” in “WAN IP setting”.

Can someone help out?
