Speed tests and how to get better results This is a discussion on, Run a speed test and post your results here within the O2 Broadband help and support forum; 23ms isn't bad? And how often have you come across other players with significantly faster pings than that?...

I know its good but with fully wired connections I was expecting better, many times when I play one to one shooters, the killcam shows the other player spotted me earlier than I could make out in real play. I ran the speedtest on the browser on ps3 and got pin of 290ms on it, not sure if this is because of console limitations?

Re: Run a speed test and post your results here

hi jemmy,my ping to the bbc is 20ms and i play shooters on the 360 and ps3.your in game speed is more to do with the server your connected to for the game.i wouldnt take much notice of ping times on speedtests.
if i use speedtest.net through my ps3 and test to the manchester server(38miles away),my ping is 45ms but if i use paris its only 30ms.
in game lag isnt forced to be your connection, the screen your using can play a part and also the other persons set up.ive had virgin, sky and o2 for gaming and o2 is streets ahead.
do a connection test on the ps3 and see what NAT type youve got,you want type 2.

As Andy says, your gameplay will be mainly limited by the server you're connecting to.

23ms shows any problems are not inherently down to the O2 network. You'll come across very few other players with pings as low as that.

However, the route to the game server may add considerable additional latency and if they have a better route to the server you are using (e.g. more local) then you're at a disadvantage to other players.

Hi Andy & Saturday my NAT type is 2, with wired I think one always gets this and I agree O2 gaming is better than others, I was with sky and it is much better than Sky.
Infact many times I have used the PS3 gaming while both PCs were being used as well with Skype etc which does take its share of upstream but still the gameplay was good.
Thanks for the advice to both of you

Re: Run a speed test and post your results here

Hi, first post so please be gentle!

Results for speed test as below. Installation about 3 days ago and have received DLM completion email saying that I on 'just the right package' - Premium.

Router stats:

Uptime: 0 days, 2:43:48

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,338 / 23,814

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 16.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 2.5 / 5.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 8.0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 524

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 25 / 0

Speed tests:

This test is fairly consistent having been repeated a few times.

Broadbandspeedchecker = 4192 kbps D / 327 kbps U. This test is fairly consistent but can vary from 2500 kbps to 4500 lbps D approx

This test is erratic and I've had tests as low approx 4.0mb/s to as high as 111mb/s!

Giganews Europe test: 3376kbps - quite consistent over a number of tests

Be There Internet - 4106.9kbps - very consistent

The upshot is, I think I have an issue in that a number of tests report consistently low results considering the high modem sync rate. I'm on a very short line - being able to see my exchange building from my living room across the road. A friend of mine a few doors down is on the same package with o2, same modem and slighlty longer line - but is able to achieve resulsts consistently higher on broadbandspeedchecker - usually around 11-12000 kbps. Should I be giving O2 a call about this?

Thanks!

Re: Run a speed test and post your results here

Your stats are just about as good as you can get - as you say, you live within yards of the exchange and have a very clean connection

Speed tests from public servers can only give you a rough idea of your throughput at the best of times. Some, like speedtest.net are completely unpredictable in my experience.

The first thing that springs to mind is that you are connecting wirelessly? If so then that's almost certainly the problem.

Connect via ethernet then try a download of a large file from a known good server (such as Microsoft), time it and work out the transfer rate. If you're still not happy with the results (you should get ~19meg allowing for overheads) then the problem probably lies with your PC or similar. Doubt very much that it is a O2 problem.

Re: Run a speed test and post your results here

I've just changed back to my old Sky Netgear router that I'd flashed ages ago and am getting twice the speed (8mg) than I was with the O2 box 1. I'm on the 'old' standard package so am paying for up 8mg but have recently been getting 3/4mg with O2's box. To me it shows what a load of rubbish their own box is- an old thompson router and they#ve got a nerve asking for it back-think they're the only isp that does.
